What kind of world would Eve be without internet anonymity?

Without "Internet Anonymity", about 2/3's of the "adult" entertainment would close up shop in a month... and the same would go for many gaming sites... because most of the assholes would suddenly realize "Oh, crap... ".

Which is to say alot of ISP companies would feel the pinch, too.

Don't really care one way or the other.

So funny. What if? The one I like is EVE's complexity. Woo hoo. If it's so complex,
how come it's the favorite haunt of the brain dead sociopathic among us who love:

Vampires
Zombies! (eek eek)

Yes, complex. Really. I can see it.

For me, not much difference.

I think losing anonymity would create unnecessary problems for the community though.

Some people are internet spaceship crazy. Other people are just crazy.

Signatures should be used responsibly...

A big tool in hacking is social engineering, getting to know who your target is, gaining knowledge in how to hack their accounts by the personal info they provide publicly. So if you think it'll be a better world because everyone knows exactly who you are beyond just a few trusted people, you're in for a rude awakening.

Just like when CCP had that ship design competition publicly blowing peoples anonymity, screw that! ...why a lot of 3d artists here didn't participate. But then it was less about this community and more about publicity, a reason in itself to say shove it.

I'm in it for the money

You guys are aware of the fact that there is a small subset of us who do have our names out there. Anonymity was sacrificed for the purposes of the CSM Election

Aware, yes.

Also aware that bad things do sometimes happen to people on the internet, anonymity or not. And to be clear, I am referring to the InterNet as a whole and not just one subset.

Such is the world we live in, online and off.

I love a bit of thread necro (not real necro though...that's just weird).

I wouldn't be any different if I was using my real name. I might be a little bit more outspoken on some things on the forum perhaps, but in game, no different to how I am now.

Eh, I doubt it'd be that noticeable. I've spent a lot of time getting shot at by CVA, Goons and whoever. At fanfest we were still just chatting like it was nothing. It's just a game, most people are smart enough to not take it too far.

I would be tempted to go trash a gankers car if they lived nearby....you know...for the lulz.

:)

:P

I could also make sure that anyone I hire for my department are not Goons. You may think this is a long shot but I found out I almost hired a Goon last year! (he was hired by someone I know and found this out over beers in a pub)

Good thing I found out and nixed that!

:)

:P

Remember guys, the gankers are the ones who are supposed to be the bad people. Roll

I believe that it would be discrimination not to employ someone based on what faction they align with in a video game

I think that behaviors would change fast, People like to bring up Facebook in this discussion, but they leave out that all that crap on face book? Ends up that it frequently has real world consequences and people are starting to wise up to that.

I will say that Ragnarok Online, which is the only game I can think of off the top of my head that is not a facebook game but has your personal info attached, has some of the most helpful, polite gamers I've ever had the pleasure of playing alongside.

Good for you, I have received racial abuse (in game) from an ******* who got a hold of my real life identity.
Had people get hold of pictures of me twice and try to use them to harass me in game.

I am super thick skinned and very secure in myself so never even so much as bothered to report these losers but lets not pretend that this stuff doesn't happen in this game.

I would not play EVE without anonymity.

99% of people would leave in-game defeats in-game. But that 1% - go ganking for a while, and you will see what they are like. One example: the minerbumping site had one article the other day showing an EVEmail where one person said "I would beat you bloody in real life if I could find you".

Only one person in game knows my IRL identity, and they knew me before either of us played EVE, they aren't traceable to me and we don't really interact much in game at all. (Although I do get the odd market tip from them).

I support the New Order and CODE. alliance. www.minerbumping.com

A person I wasn't friends with on Facebook (but an online friend of a friend of a friend) decided one day to drive down a couple of states, break into my house, and wait for me there. He was able to locate me because though my first and last name are common on their own, they are unique when paired together. Not sure how he got my address but I was pretty active with a few groups at my Uni who maintained mailing lists and similar information that was likely not locked down from public access.

It's good that nothing happened to you, but I hope you are sensitive to and can appreciate the importance of privacy.

I was pretty flippant about it too, until something happened to me.

My circumstance was similar. However my last name is shared by about 36 people in the entire country, so I'm pretty easy to find. It's why I post on an alt now, never share alt killmails, and have more or less given my main up to skill training, thanks to the info being out there attached to that character now.
