I mean no ill will...no..srsly. but.

I have a question. Eve is my first MMO. I broke my teeth playing RTS games. I have never seen a gaming community go so far with their outright critisizm of game developers as I have seen here. Not in all my time in this game, but lately I find players feel free to "dress down" developers sometimes in a very personal nature.

So my question is ...Is this normal? Have there been other instances where the Eve community decided the go all out maniac on developers?

That is a result of devs getting too cozy with the gaming community. Some devs are also part of major alliances which doesnt help either.

Devs have also been involved in past misconduct (cheating). So if there is a lack of respect for the EVE developers, it's their own doing.

Actually it's a result of their being more involved with the community. Things therefore become more personal.
This has both good & bad effects.

Most MMO's are not involved anywhere near as close with their player base, so Devs are some distant thing that you swear about, but have no idea who they really are.

CCP Devs are actual people, so there is a single person that you know is behind nerfing your favourite thing. It also means there is a single person behind your favourite thing getting buffed. So it goes both ways. Both Negative & Positive reactions are amplified.

Yes and no.

Yes because sometimes players get so entrenched in their own ways of doing or thinking that they go off on a tantrum when there is even the slightest change to their mode of operations.**
And then there are times where the DEVs actually do some rather boneheaded things.

No because sometimes the anger is more 'heat of the moment" and passes or in pure jest (because CCP is known for almost comical blunders).

It's also worth noting that the game has been chugging along for a decade, and much of that decade included developers interacting with the community. That time span, in this close interaction strategy, helps make things more individualized. We've been seeing their names around for a long time, or can roughly pin down where they joined the team that we already know. So even other games that interact closely with their fans won't get the level of familiarity you see here, due to the their likely lack of age.

Another factor is that Eve, as a game, is more personal than others. The social dynamics of the game are such that, comparatively, people invest quite heavily in it, and I think often feel the fluctuations more keenly. Their investment is not just in their characters, grown over years, but in the social systems and legacy that they've crafted over time. Other games, you make a new character on a different server, or there's other means of reducing 'permanence.' Here, messing with a player's game experience or legacy it's a bit like messing with someone's house. I think this makes people more vigilant and irritable.

Prior posters have mentioned reasons they think the dev's 'deserve' it. I'd take those with a grain of salt.

not as much as throwing salt at a feet of a vampire, more like pulling finger nails, rubbing them on salt and then asking them to write an extended essay on Tolstoy "War and Peace" in a single morning.

on the commical front: Booot.ini and Tuxford's inadvertently shutting down TQ because wrong server.

"Dev bashing" and personal attacks are banable offenses and you should report it if you see it.

As someone already mentioned, mass attacks on devs happened during the "Summer of Rage". The situation back then escalated so fast that forum mods were not able to react. Although I participated in the "Summer of Rage", I was really ashamed of being a part of the community considering what many players posted during the event. My participation, along with many others, was in a form of constructive criticism of the proposed/leaked/speculated future course of the game.

Situation with industry is not that dramatic. Many of the changes that have been announced in the last couple of days are good. Some of them are bad and deserve to be criticized so the developers can see potential downsides that they have missed. After all, tens of thousands of players are more likely to spot a downside of a change than dozens of devs working on a particular feature no matter how hard they work.

Open and personal discussion that CCP's devs have with the community is the reason why the game is still growing after 10 years and why it's so great. The downside is that some players take the discussions too personal. On the other hand, you should also count in ISD - a group of player volunteers helping GMs and forum moderators manage the forums.

I came to eve in 2004, and its been this way since even back then. The devs even run with jokes people in the community make, like TomB walking around fan fest hitting things with his nerf bat. Its just how we are. Eve has one of the best communities i have seen, and there is actually a ton of communication for the devs to the players. shrugs.

I'm quietly considering resuming my old correspondence habits with EVE devs. I know there are a handful of devs that know exactly what I am talking about.

I'll assume the answer is yes unless one of them comes in here and says "please god no".

Though I think the sheer amount of it is ungrateful and a lot of the virtiol is unwarranted Id much rather have a community that vents its spleen constantly than the lap-dog followers of Games Workshop, Blizzard, Mojang, Nintendo, and Apple who dont believe their Gods can do anything wrong.

At least our God doesnt butt in when I say what I feel about them or interfere with what I do in game.
