"There is only one new female character being added to what is arguably the world's most beloved mythic series. It's as if 51 percent of the population cried out in pain, and was suddenly silenced."

Hey Star Wars -- Where the Hell Are the Women?

I'm a bit curious who's left to care after both A] the prequels and B] this week's giant middle finger to anyone who bought into the IP over the last three decades and change.

Tons of folks are "left to care", from the "kids" who actually liked the Prequels, to those of us wanting to cleanse that 3 episode horror from our minds.

Now, define IP (?????) Either it's Internet Provider, or I haven't had enough coffee yet.

Intellectual property, in this case referring primarily to the gamut of after-Endor novel series.

Do you like Philz? I'm having some Julie's Ultimate this morning.

Definitely not enough coffee. Decent coffee ? Please.....I live in Florida. Shocked

BTW, the Expanded Universe is not being used as canon or anything else apparently.

Why Oh Why do we cry and moan?!

Let's leave the political correct BS, and false intolerance baiting cards out of the work of peoples intellectual property.

And on a side note.. I'm sure there will be more female characters than just one in the next series, as well as some of various alien species.

When the original SW came out in 1977, it was understandable that there was a dearth of female characters in a space opera film. Except for our plucky princess.......and I guess Aunt Beru, who pretty much was just seen cooking in the kitchen......until she got cooked at least.

The world has changed. And that's a roomful of guys in that cast photo, excepting the one new minor character and an aged Carrie Fisher, whom I guarantee you will just be sitting around on a couch or something yacking.

Since when does wanting the presence of female characters have anything to do with political correctness ? It's called wanting a realistic proportion of involved character types.

Jar-Jar Binks had more clout than Amidala. And that's sad. Ugh.

ed addendum: Lucas added Lando in ESB due to the outcry from the African American community about lack of representation in this fictional universe. That has a LOT more to do with "political correctness" than folks wanting more female characters.

I supported that decision though and still do. But it can get carried away. Human African-Americans, yes. But it can lead to complications, like having to somehow explain African-American Vulcans. What?

Name one female character of significance in the original trilogy that isn't Princess Leia, and name one female character of significance in the prequel trilogy that isn't Padme or Shmi.

You really can't.

So I wouldn't be so sure to say that there will be more than one female character.

Enjoying the rain today? ;)

The linked article is ignorant.
Quote:
So when I looked at that Star Wars cast list, Hannah was on my mind. Surely in the second decade of the twenty-first century, she'd be given more awesome female characters to choose from in this contemporary incarnation of Star Wars. Leia would still be there, as the fighting princess — but maybe there would be a female fighter pilot whose swagger could rival Han Solo's, or a female Sith strutting through some scenery-chewing lines. Nope. There's one female name other than Carrie Fisher's on that cast list: the relative unknown Daisy Ridley, whom fans are speculating might play the daughter of Han Solo and Princess Leia. Of course, more cast members will be announced, but this is probably our core cast — the main characters.

Having Ridley is great, but one new female lead in a cast of men? That's how we launch ourselves into the future of this series, which inspires little girls with pink swords, as well as old girls like myself who graduated to sharper weapons long ago? Are we seriously still pretending that the universe is comprised almost entirely of men

If Daisy Riddly is (like many speculate) gonna play Han and Leia's daughter, that means she's Jaina Freaking Solo-Fel., one of the most kick ass characters in the Star Wars Universe.

Problem is that nothing on that wiki is canon anymore. While you may indeed be right that Daisy Riddly will play Jaina, it's also possible that there is no Jaina.

Since you're the resident expert here, did they really add cleavage to her jedi robe or is that an unrelated dress and cape combo she just happened to wear on picture day?

Looking at the top comments on that article a couple of people highlighted the lack of female characters in The Matrix and Pirates of the Carribean as well as SW, but tbh watching them I never particularly noticed or cared. The female characters in all three series were iconic, popular and had a fair bit of screen time as well as opportunity to develop the character. Compare that to something like, Terminator Salvation which had a few strong female characters, and tbh it seemed to dilute their impact vs say, Sarah Connor in T2.

I don't see why it should be seen as a sign of misogyny if blockbusters focus on a core female star in action films. It's kind of a backhanded compliment that they can carry a film solo against a backdrop of male characters in a way. T2 demonstrated what a strong female lead can do in an action film. In a sense complaining about a lack of female stars actually smacks of "we need moar eye-candy" and is a bit insulting.

No.

THIS is insulting: Sandra Bullock goes from female space heroine and survivalist..........to throwing Tupperware Parties.

I'm a gay male, so my opinion has nothing to do at all with more "eye candy". I'm tired of guys having "all the fun".

And then when 2 women are aggressive in a movie, guys freak out and won't watch. "Thelma and Louise" was castigated by men who could only see it as "women running around out of control". If they had actually watched it, only one of them ever shoots one rapist with one bullet, and that is absolutely it. And folks were calling it a "female blood bath".

20th Century Fox didn't even bother to promote Sigourney Weaver as the heroine of "Alien", for fear that men would not go see it.

But you are right about the "eye candy" thing. That's all guys want. Sandra Bullock couldn't even be a "real woman" in Gravity without them making sure everyone knew she was a bereaved mother-figure.

It's just seriously crazy stuff.

I know, saw you mention it before, wasn't an attack on anyone :)
I think film makers have to tread a fine line with audiences as well. Hetero male audiences may prefer a horde of semi nude slappers running about, women less so. Perhaps that trend of focusing on a core female character is for us. I prefer just a couple of female leads because I like to watch the character development, where with the male characters it's just a bit of random ogling.

Not all that bothered about this next series tho, I was more pleased to hear they are considering spin off films for Yoda and Bobba Fett \o/ I'm betting Disney can actually expand on the universe properly tbh, although it's a shame all the 'non-cannon' stuff is being dropped.

....although I guess I must acknowledge that the filmmakers are making this series of movies for pre-pubescent boys, so no icky girls are allowed Lol

Lucas himself said the prequels were "children's films".

I will only approve of this new Star Wars film if Seth MacFarlane agrees to parody it.

Also, lets give JJ Abrams a big hand for successfully raiding both the old folks home AND the rehab center!

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?
