Auto Target missiles on red flashy pods?

So last night I was watching this nice fellow ganking haulers.
He would head out to the gate.. wait a bit.. blow up hauler and friend/alt would scoop the loot while he warped away in his pod.
Soon as his timer ran out he would come right back to do it all over again.

Of course a person earning a living that way would get a nice bounty on their head and so I was trying to figure out a way to pod him before he warped away.

Since I didn't think I had the skills to lock his pod before he warped away.. I had the idea of using auto targeting missiles and let them loose as soon as his ship blew up.

Well.. it didn't work. They simply would not fire.

I wasn't sure if it was because I had my safety setting on yellow instead of red.. or if it was because I was in high sec.. Or if auto target missiles only work when you are being targeted?

I tried searching around a bit and seem to get a lot of conflicting threads on how auto target missiles work.

Auto-targetting missiles usually only attack things that aggress you first, so no, you cannot use them to kill pods.

The best thing to kill pods in low/high are staggered smartbombs, but you have to be extremely careful if you use them in high-sec. If you so much as scratch anything else CONCORD will blow you up.
Second best is a sensor boosted arty Thrasher, but with that you also need a bit of luck as the pod should be able to warp away before you can shoot it. If you know where he's flying to, it's better to try and catch him at the station.

Thanks for the info!

It appears he is warping to a safe spot first and then insta dock at a station..
Since he does the same thing every single time.. I think with some work and luck I can surprise him at his safe spot.

And if he is busy using an alt to loot the wreck.. he might not even notice right away...

If he's spamming warp when his ship is about to die, it's highly unlikely you'll get his pod even with SeBo or ReSeBo. Likewise, even if you find his safe (unlikely in a pod within the minute time it takes him to arrive and warp again) you'll probably not be able to lock him before he warps.

Your best bet is to sit on station, with a SeBo sniper and get him there. Although I suspect, being the dutiful and well prepared ganker he is, that he's ensured his safe -> station warp ensures almost an insta dock or has chosen a station with a large docking ring to prevent this kind of thing.

Smartbombs or GTFO :p
Or you could just gank his hauler for lulz, or have your own faster moving ship and steal his loot before he's able to scoop it.
Actually... where was this? Cool

In case you want to **** him off,
killing his pod doesn't mean anything.

Instead, before he loots it...

Suicide the wreck.

Yeah I considered those things.. But I am interested in the idea of podding him just to mix up his routine a bit.

It is a busy route on the way to Dodixie.
I had no idea it was a popular gank spot until recently when someone accidentally announced in local that a freighter they intended to gank was inbound.

Watching a freighter go down was pretty fun.

But that would mean losing a ship. How can you demand that sacrifice from someone?

I think it was more of a suggestion than a demand.

Anyway.. its not a big deal to lose a ship in order to reach your goal..

Why hasn't anyone explained that bounties don't work how OP thinks they do?

Would this be Balle by any chance? Just wardec the corp or set your ship up for alpha damage and kill them before they can pop their prey.

Balle, Deltole, etc..

A formal declaration of war seems a bit silly for such a situation, no?

Press button, pay isk, shoot wartargets. Which part of that is hard or excessive?

The part you left out of course because wardecs actually do not work in the way you described.

Well.. pods instantly align..

Anyway.. this weekend I will try some different setups and if all else fails I like the idea from Solecist Project's Alt of suiciding the wreck.
