Some of the vilest, sexually deviant, racist messages lurk in ship hangars everywhere.

Furthermore, I am required to look at them everytime I 'Show Info' on a ship or hit the D-Scan button.

This applies to POS modules as well - and its vitally important CCP act on this before POSes spread to nearly EVERY system in EVE.

I get tired D-scanning systems and finding POS mods named 'Dead N***** Storage' for instance. (Yes, Pulp Fiction reference, but highly inappropriate in any game for 12 year-olds.)

While I suppose it could be dealt with via the petition system, I don't think CCP will take action because they are uninterested in removing racists and/or sexual deviants from the EVE Community. They pay subscriptions after all, and aren't doing something dangerous and subversive like doubling your ISK and encouraging a singalong on Teamspeak.

No. The cleanest and fairest method is to completely remove the ability to rename structures and ships in the first place. I hope to see this in the next large expansion.

Eve is not a game for 12 year olds...

If it offends you speak to a GM via the petition system, I like being able to name my ships, and whilst I do not and will never tolerate racism if you go down this route successive changes will result in hello kitty in space as sooner or later everyone will have complained about everything forcing game design changes resulting in a sanitised mmo lacking character and flavour.

Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction...

While I sympathize with your position, its already been shown that a significant portion of the EVE Community is not capable of responsibly handling this degree of customization. Ship name customization should not be allowed to remain - if it is being abused as an outlet for ruining others' game experience. Especially for blacks and other disadvantaged minorities.

I suppose you WANT CCP's annual Fanfest event to continue to look like an Aryan Nations reunion year in and year out.
I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that.

Look, Its not like I'm not calling for a witch hunt, just for CCP to remove tools which lend themselves to this kind of corrosive behavior. Its a lot easier and neater than expecting GMs to handle it on an endless case by case basis.

This isn't Burger King. Its not 'have it your way'. Customization should only be exist in a form that insures that abuse is absolutely impossible.

I'm in the mood for this...

I know it's a trollthread,
but I post this for all the smart people out there who like me
understand this really simple and perfectly working technique how to deal with life.

People who take offense can only blame themselves,
because it is them *taking* it.

Don't take it... problem solved.

And people projecting offense are only projecting their own inadequacies, because those inadequacies have to exist within themselves for their ability to project them onto others.

Irony, meet Devine.
Devine, say Hi to Irony.

You two should have a talk.

And that's all I will say to you today. :)

O? I knew you changed your face but I didn't know you changed your name to Irony, since you've projected your inadequacies onto me.

Apparently you suggest you and I should talk.

This remark is pure discrimination. There is no connection to the proud viking heritage of the Icelandic population with the Aryan Nations, so to slander them as white supremists and national socialists is not very nice at all.

Touche. Fanfest DOES suck. However, I'm basing my anal-sis on pictures I've seen posted. I consider it a positive thing that I haven't spent thousands of dollars or flown thousands of miles over a video game. Adults simply don't do that. Good point.

However.....
I'm merely pointing out that the player-base of EVE is about as white as your average Star Trek convention. Sure, plenty of Asian gamers, but we all know that they don't really count as disadvantaged minorities. At least, not in the state of California they don't.

Quite easy for abusive behavior to be considered 'acceptable' when the targets of that abuse exist in such low numbers.

Case in point - its well known that lots of gays are employed by CCP. Therefore gay slurs, either in-game or on the forums, are taken seriously and rapidly dealt with with severe punishment. Their staff take it very personally simply because it cuts, shall we say....close to the bone.

When it comes to racial minorities, however - not so much. I theorize that this is simply because they are not significantly represented either in the playerbase or on CCP's payroll. Its well known that even blatant public racial attacks are ignored when they've been clearly brought to CCP Falcon's attention (for example, CODE members repeatedly called 'N*****' on a well known Bonus Room Soundcloud.)

CCP allowing the current state of affairs (unlimited ship naming) to continue is a form of passive racism that is nearly as bad.
They have a blind spot and I am simply shining a light on it. Its a small thing to ask, really, when it comes down to it.

Interesting angle to go with

Complain about institutionalised racism and then make a racially insensitive statement.

You can disable the name column in Overview and show only the ship type, corporation, etc. You can also right click the ship in Overview to see the pilot without ever seeing the name of the ship. You've probably done this already, but fix your Overview so WTs/friendlies are properly highlighted.

The only reason you might be doing "Show Info" on a ship is to read up on what the ship can do? I suggest you start making yourself a spreadsheet that would help you instantly reference what type the ship is and what it can generally do. Being able to evaluate what kind of turrets a ship has by using "Look at ship" is also more useful than pouring over Show Info while things are happening very quickly.

Personally, I prefer people read ship names in Dscan or Overview. I tend to rename my ship randomly and it does throw people off sometimes..
