It's really going to affect things like Netflix rather than EVE. They will charge Netflix more for the faster streaming...then it's up to Netflix to decide what to do about it with their customers. Gee, I could never guess what they would do Roll.

Netflix has already upped their rates for new customers while grandfathering the rate for current users "for a while longer". And it has nothing to do with this other scheme at all.

EVE pulls a tremendous amount of bandwidth on patch days, I'm sure.

Drop in a bucket really, if 500k users downloaded 1 gig inside an hour, that'd result in roughly 1.1 Tbps. USA alone has an internal average speed of 16,646 Tbps, which by following trends of network usage usually peaks around 40,000 Tbps.

It's cute that people thought that ever existed when in most places you have pretty much only one or two options for broadband internet.

ISPs (particularly Comcast) are monopolistic and it's getting to be absolutely ******* ridiculous and I'm going to end this post before I get too angry.

What with the internet monopolies and messed up health care system, you American folks really do have my sympathies, sometimes it's like you live in a 3rd world country.

Here in the UK, we have bodies set up specifically to stop all this crap happening with monopolies, and to make sure an open and competitive market will always exist in all areas not just for internet, but utilities too.

Monopolies are bad Mkay America.

Monopolies happen b/c of the gov't in America. So more gov't is certainly not the answer.

In Boston, FiOS (a fiber-optic service provide by Verizon) was not allowed to be installed b/c the former Mayor Mumbles (Menino) decreed that Verizon would have to install the lines in the poorest neighborhoods FIRST (citing "equality") when, in reality, he's good friends with the people over at Comcast, the monopoly in the area. This is pretty much the case across the entire country.

People say on eve is a drop in the ocean, but do you really think that will matter if they can squeeze even a little more money out of a company? ofc not, they will do it, the question is how much will it cost CCP and will they bow to international internet terroism!

Monopolies happen because the ridiculously rich have funded and elected most of the House of Representatives.

The problem with "less government" being the answer is a practical one. If a local government does not have the ability to grant a private utility the right of way to install infrastructure, who will? A single private landowner would be able to completely impede a private utility by demanding an exorbitant amount of money for burying in their land or outright refusing to allow it.

Few things, first it was the chair of the FCC, not the Supreme Court.

Edit: I thought you brought this up due to this story: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/24/technology/fcc-new-net-neutrality-rules.html?_r=0

Second, the cable companies are only responding this way because we didn't set up the system correctly in the first place. We treated the internet like a service instead of a utility. The UK did it right. The reason you have only one or two providers at your house is because they need to run their own lines to your house instead of using shared lines. You pay for access and service whereas with say a telephone, you can pick from several services on the same line. At my house I have two lines from the pole for Comcast and verizon. If I went to dish I'd have to get more equipment.

This will affect companies like eve because now it adds an extra cost to operate that can vary based on use. Now CCP may have to consider bandwidth with game innovation. That's just bad all around.

We need to treat internet providers like a utility as in the UK and elsewhere. To do that though we less money in government pulling the strings so we can have proper regulation to ensure the democratic principles that apply here. I don't blame the ISPs for trying to maximize profit in the current environment. I blame Congress for not doing more to protect the economic and information freedom the internet provides equally.

Only direct contributions to election campaigns have to be disclosed. Contributions to non-partisan groups like think tanks (which dwarf what they contribute to election campaigns, directly and indirectly) are not considered political contributions.

Those stats are not worth squat with the way contributions are reported in america, which is usually not at all if it's to a superpac, non profit, etc.

And when you go to the hospital you have to share a room and wait in line for a doctor, who probably has to be imported.

One time I got several tiny glass shards in my eye. I had to go to the ER, because it was late on a Saturday and no ophthalmology clinics were open, nor would they open the following morning. I entered the ER at 11 pm, and the sun was already out by the time I saw a doctor.

We don't exactly have a fantastic health system in the US either. ERs obviously have to prioritize trauma patients over dudes sobering up with bits of glass in their eyes, but they're terribly understaffed.

Pretty much spot on. I use a 4G wireless and I can monitor my bandwidth. 6 hours of Eve is at best 2MB of "stuff" and I think how many chat windows you have open is apt to have a lot of influence on it - as well as clicking on one too many gifs.

This makes me wonder if the stream is scaled. For example, if I was on a nullsec mega-blob, that's a lot of ship position and heading data for the overview. Is the population of the grid influencing bandwidth? I'm certain of this. Unfortunately I haven't seen proof because when I get blobbed, I'm not looking at the bandwidth usage graph.
