Now that the supreme court in the US has decided that internet providers can now charge to give company's greater bandwidth or indeed slow a site down considerably if they don't pay up, how will this effect gamers in the US and eve-online specifically?

Hahahaha, net neutrality.
It's cute that people thought that ever existed when in most places you have pretty much only one or two options for broadband internet.

ISPs (particularly Comcast) are monopolistic and it's getting to be absolutely ******* ridiculous and I'm going to end this post before I get too angry.

EVE doesn't require more bw than an old 14.4k modem so don't worry (except on patch days).

What with the internet monopolies and messed up health care system, you American folks really do have my sympathies, sometimes it's like you live in a 3rd world country.

Here in the UK, we have bodies set up specifically to stop all this crap happening with monopolies, and to make sure an open and competitive market will always exist in all areas not just for internet, but utilities too.

Monopolies are bad Mkay America.

We do too, they're just not doing their job in this case.

But isnt the guy in charge some former cable exec or something? I recall reading something about him being the WORST possible person to put in charge considering his past business practices.

I've slowed my net speed down to a crawl once (2Mb/s instead of the usual 45) while playing around with my router settings. Aside from a decrease in responsiveness from the market window, my EVE client still ran like a charm.

I just undocked for the first time and someone challenged me to a duel. Wat do?

Yes, this seems like a crap deal.

I doubt EvE pulls enough bandwith accross the US to actually have a providor throttle it down. Companies like You Tube, NetFlix, Amazon, etc. that pull huge quantities of bandwith. I doubt EvE will be affected (at least in the near term).

The bodies in the UK are just as terrible as the ones in the US at doing their job, the supposedly open and competitive market in the UK is a myth.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

EVE pulls a tremendous amount of bandwidth on patch days, I'm sure.

You will note other issues like having an empty overview and a new ship, then suddenly being an egg.

Tell me again about how every playstyle you dont engage in "doesn't require any effort" and everyone who does it needs to die in a fire. Be sure to mention about how you tried it once but it was too easy/boring/ethnic-homophobic slur.

Capitalism sound like a good idea but its evolutionary outcome is always the same...monopolies and greed. Unless a govt is willing to keep it in check, it favors no one but the wealthy thus producing plutocratic govts.

And the fiber that is used by Comcast/AT&T was effectively paid for by the US taxpayer because they got tax subsidies.

My issue with this is, if the internet providers in the US charge more for allowing eve on there lines, then will ccp bump the price for everyone or just those in the US

The problem isn't managing bandwidth. The problem is charging for quality of service. Car Analogy:

There's a road (owned by Comcast) from your house that leads to a Target and a Wal-Mart. Right now you can drive at up to 50 MPH to go to either store. Without net neutrality, the road owner (Comcast) can make the following rules:
a) if you drive to Target, you can travel at 100 MPH,
b) if you drive to Wal-Mart, you can only travel at 5 MPH.
Same road, but the legal speed limit is based on your destination and not on the traffic or road bandwidth.

Meaning, they can arbitrarily limit the speeds at which a store's customers are allowed to visit the store's website. So if a store doesn't pay the special quality of service fee, then they risk losing customers because your website is so slow.

Plus, a lot of the major ISPs are also in the content business, and thus can use their control over the roads/pipes to limit or control access to competitor's content, and to push their own content.

tl;dr - We're back to the era of the Robber Barons where the trains were controlled by regional monopolies.

Pon Farr Memorial: once every 7 years, all the carebears in high-sec must PvP or they will be temp-banned.
