FoF Missiles interactions with cloaking devices

So, i normally loiter around looking through this forum more than actually ever posting anything!

I was amusingly talking on twitter the other day about this idea and was after sharing it with the greater community for feedback on it.

So FoF missiles are rarely used from my experience. You hardly see them launched, let alone carried in ships to swap to when needed.

I was thinking about the idea of why can’t FoF missiles perhaps target cloaked vessels within the missile range?

Ok this won’t stop people picking a safe spot in the system and afk cloak in the system, but should at least limit people cloaking in high traffic areas or around celestials?

Instead of completely negating those that have trained up for the use of cloaking vessels for scouting, it could perhaps be refined to being used on ships that aren't specialized for the use of a cloak?

After all.. "the things got to have a tailpipe"

Thoughts?

How will the missile tell if the target is friendly or not? I can see this being implemented, then the forums filled with rage because some noob was firing FOFs and hit a cloaked blue, who then got mad.

EDIT for clarity: this is an exaggeration, but this problem should be considered.

Enemies are just friends who stab you in the front.

They wouldn't.

Just like with a smartbomb, they would just hit what was in the area. Unlike a smartbomb they would only hit one thing, but that thing could be much further away. I don't think it would work without some mechanics changes, I am pretty sure FOF missiles only choose hostile targets and then obsess over the occasional structure.

It would be amusing if nothing else. I am sure some cloak adherents will hate any chance of it decloaking an active cloak however.

Allowing FoF missiles to target cloaked ships makes them a method of cloak detection. More specifically, they become a method of cloak detection that has been suggested previously, at least in significant part.

See this list for details.

You don't get a +1 from me, OP, but kudos for suggesting an anti-cloak mechanic that uses existing assets.

As with many of the 'I want to kill cloaked vessels' ideas, this would totally be a huge 'Win' button for Gate Camps.

That depends on how the FOF AI would prioritize 'non-hostile' players from structures.

If the mechanics changed to prioritize players, at least some significant maneuvering would be required or else all you would ever find would be your fleetmates. If they choose structures or NPCs over non-hostile players all you would find would be the gate, or possibly the navy guarding the gate, which would be humorous more than anything else.

As far as I can tell, the AI for FOF missiles works similar to drones, and only counts things as hostile that have shot at you, or you at them. I don't know what their beef is with random asteroids and stuff, but I have sure wailed on some rocks with FOF missiles in the past.

I think the best use of FoF missiles would be to remake them into anti-EWAR missiles. No lock required, they automatically fire at EWAR emitting ships. Having a priority list would be good. But failing that, 1st priority vs ECM.

This would be very interesting, especially if Defenders were fixed so that the EWAR ship can defend itself.

+1 for this guy ^
I support any notion to fix existing mechanics.

Vote me for CSM, I will campaign on a platform of "Nagging CCP to fix existing mechanics in right ways." Big smile

So, a sort of "Wild Weasel" concept. I like it!

To the OP, I have long been in favor of a mechanic by which cloaked ships can be hunted. However, this concept is too "Easy Button" for my tastes. There needs to be more interaction from the player doing the hunting.
