I've never been a fan of South American cities. At all. I don't see the draw.

I'd love to visit South America one day, as in visit the natural beauty of the different countries. I've never had the desire to visit Rio, ever.

The anti-Americanism is so rife in South America, however, that I don't think I'll ever visit, sadly.

Anti Britishness is pretty rife there too.

Shame as northern Argentina looks really nice.

No wonder al the ex German National Socislists ran off there. Looks like switzerland with cheap beef.

Check out the epic Neuschwanstein castle south in Bavaria on a return trip. Like most museums you're not allowed to film or take photos, though.

Indeed. On that Germany trip when I was 5 y o, we did drive around for a few weeks after the Berlin visit, and this led to a visit to Neuschwanstein.

Mind that the movie "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" had just been out the previous year, in which the castle was featured quite prominently as the castle of the Evil King of Vulgaria.

Since I was only 5, I still wasn't reconciled in my head, the difference between reality and a movie. So, I understandably knew we would be seeing the fun flying car any second. There was a dirt courtyard nearby with 2 tire tracks on it, and I just knew Chitty had just been there. Lol

We were there too late in the day for the tour. That would have to wait till I was 10 y o., and more able to appreciate what I was seeing anyway. It was fantastic, but I found the unfinished Throne Room a bit disturbing.

For me Prague, wonderful city, cheap , even if locals find it expensive, man I even remember buying some of the best looking pig skin jackets ever there! Also I severely love those small little shops semi hidden in the road where you can buy those little trinkets made from multicolored glass and if you are nice enough, perhaps share a tale or two with the locals.

But I am in love of LatinAmerica, Dominican Republic´s Punta Cana is marvelous, specially if you know where to go, there are small huts, secluded from the tourist part of town, where most of the workers live, where they close the small streets and everybody goes dancing and you get lost amidst the sea of bodies moving to the rhythm.

The City of Merida in Venezuela is to this day the only City at Night amidst the mists where you can literally feel the Power of The Elements walking in the 19th century cobblestone paved roads and when you take a strange turn you find yourself in a small alley that houses a clandestine bar with people dancing to old 1970s and 1980s tunes, one of the few cities I know that has all kinds of hidden/clandestine gathering places for all sorts of activities, just be sure to be with a local.

Cali in Colombia is a feast on the ears, specially if you go during the Colombian Musical Festivals, you will hear music that can literally touch your bones to the marrow with sadness, grief, happiness and joy at the same time.

Quito in Ecuador ... flawless. An experience to behold, same with Lima.

Never been to Argentina, as people down there that I have met are a bit hard to know for me, so I can´t comment on them so never been interested in going there.

Curacao and Aruba, a staple of most Venezuelan trips are awesome beach spots, have a lot of nice stories from those places

The Charm of many LatinAmerican Cities is not the sights,or their fancy restaurants or antiques, nor museums , for me Is the PEOPLE.

Real People, with wonderful stories to tell, everybody wants to tell their story, and I am the kind of person that enjoys listening as I drink some local brew and smoke for the sake of it cigars, cigarettes or pipe.

The trick is to get lucky finding a local taxi driver, not the one that is out trying to scam you from being a tourist, but a real working one, the kind that invites you home to eat and meet his family or have friends in the places you are visiting, willing to let you in on their secret spots. Doesn't work all the time sadly, but when it does, its wonderful!

I have much more luck knowing people in foreign countries that are in LatinAmerica than Europe, since people from Europe are much more ... reserved, so my trips to Europe have mostly been usual stuff, museums, cafes, restaurants, bleh bleh, but Prague was magical! Either the Tourist Agencies know how to drill charm in staff or Czech people are very friendly or a mix of both.

But down here, if you know how, you can get a tale out of practically anyone and enjoy any city.

The Cities/Countries I still have on my to-do list are Chile, Uruguay, Martinique, Sint Marteen and Guyana.

I would love to return to Georgia and Tbilisi in particular.

I spent part of my childhood on Rotterdam, and have a soft spot for that city and the gorgeous people I remember from there, and as a side tip, if you can visit Luxembourg! most of my memories are from Pics since I was so small, but I remember people there being so different and nice, or perhaps it was me being a kid.

I think people travel for very different reasons, I have been in cities people would clearly avoid or not find interesting and I enjoyed the trip, whereas others people always yell in my ear to visit and I end up feeling robbed, not only of money but life.

Hmmm interesting thread, keep it up! :D

Interesting you mention Rome, my wife and I were talking about cities to visit and Rome came up in the conversation. I think Prague will be next, well, next year. New York is next in December, can't wait to see that at Christmas!

If you're the adventuring type and like to meet new people, Rome is where it's at. The thing that makes the city so great is the people. Romans are different from the rest of Italians, for better or worse...but usually better. When you find an in, you're in for life.

I live in the north and I miss Rome for its people and habits. The heat not so much, but it feels like a wild dream every time I go there.

Like I said, you have to be the adventuring and laid back type of person to appreciate it. If you're rather fussy over things, that's not the place to go. Stick with northern Europe if that's the case. What some northern countries lack in personality they make up for in services and openness.

I never have enjoyed Rome, but I have found that thing you describe in Barcelona. Nightlife there is just one of the best for me, also I might add I have a TON of friends living there (all Venezuelan Expats) and totally agree on the People part. You just have to let go to enjoy a lot of places from a different perspective.

Cities without people are just buildings piled upon another.

Never been to Berlin. But I've been to Ramstein and Reinmein. Spent a total of 2 weeks in Germany, don't remember much, I was drunk mostly LOL. Enjoyed it however.

Good that you get the chance to go there.

Trailer Trash and proud of it!
