The virtue of patience, and why it just might save you

This is a short story of an experience I just had where being patient and keeping calm changed what was otherwise sure to be a horrible situation resulting in death.... Into an escape. Keep in mind this takes place in null-sec.

So I've just filled my hull with loot after some ratting and I want to move it in order to reprocess and get some minerals, so I decide to just fly the 2 short jumps to the refinery. I know there's neutrals that have been sitting cloaked for days waiting to hot-drop BLOPs on someone, but they haven't done anything the previous times I've jumped around. So I go.

Once reaching the second system tho, I see I'm not alone. There's a neutral Loki on the gate, uncloaked and ready to tackle my sorry non-stabbed ass. ****. I use the time of the cloak to let people know he's on the gate and consider my options. With no-one answering I decide my best course is to burn to the gate and jump back through if he aggresses.
As predicted he scrams me before I would have been able to jump, but doesn't fire. I continue to burn to the gate with AB and prepare to jump when I get the REALLY bad news. There's now a BLOP on the other side of the gate, with his friends jumping in. It's now me in my ratting BC vs. a Loki + 5-6 BLOPs.

Well ****. I can't jump through and I can't just sit here all day... Lets try to get out of scram range?
Proves useless as the Loki keeps me in range, but me moving off the gate triggers the guys on the other side to jump through. At this point I've written off my ship, and am waiting to see if there's something small I can blow up before I die. The BLOPs then start to jump through, and there's soon no less than 5-6 BLOPs + some other crap locked onto me and my chances of escape seem non-existent.

As I'm slowboating to the gate again for the hell of it, I notice ALL of the ships have opened fire. After a second of thought I realize that -IF- I can make it to the gate they won't be able to follow, as I haven't fired a single shot at this point, and don't have an aggression timer.

Well **** it, I'm going for it. I overheat EVERYTHING on my ship, from the hardeners to the armor reps and cycle them like a mad man, watching the distance to the gate get lower as my armor does the same. 80%.... 70%.... 60%.... Lower and lower but I keep getting closer to the gate.... 50%... One of them tries to bump me but misses! I reach 2500m to the gate and spam that jump button for all that I'm worth.... And make it.
I then jump back to the other station I came from not 5 minutes ago and dock up, my heart pounding and thanking the powers that be.

Note that this situation SHOULD have been impossible, but 2 crucial things allowed me to escape:

1: ALL of the enemies jumped to my side of the gate and started attacking. They should have had a reserve tackler either ready on the other side of the gate or had him not aggress, allowing him to jump and tackle if needed.

2: Despite me feeling certain that I was dead from the moment the BLOPs were called on the other side of the gate, I was patient and waited to see how things progressed. Had I started shooting in order to go down blazing, I would have 100% certainly lost my ship, and not be writing this.

LET THIS BE A LESSON. Always always ALWAYS be patient and think before you act, and you just might get out of an impossible situation.
