I see only small and medium standard charges. Where do they hide the good stuff?

You might be at a station or in a system that doesn't have faction or T2 charges stocked. You'll generally find a good selection at the major trade hubs: Jita (but watch out for hostile traffic), Dodixie, Amarr, Rens, or Hek.

Wow, calling this place a backwater is too kind.

I just checked out regional market for skillbooks and there's only 1 available under Spaceship Command and only 2 each under Gunnery and Scanning. Ugh

I'm not sure, to be honest. Something better than the standard antimatter loads I'm using now.

PvP or PvE? Blasters or Railguns?

In PvP...
- you almost always want to use Faction Antimatter (Caldari Navy will be the cheapest) and have some Null ammo (if you can use Tech 2 guns) as backup. Try to stay away from Void unless the ship(s) you use has a tracking bonus.
- you want to have Faction Antimatter and Faction Lead for railgun use. When you can use Tech 2 railguns you can add Spike and Javelin ammo for extra long and extra close range encounters (respectively).

In PvE...
- Regular Antimatter ammo will give you the best price to performance ratio for blasters. Faction and T2 ammo are a waste.
- Regular Antimatter and Lead ammo will give you the best price to performance ratio for railguns.

T2 ammo isn't necessarily BETTER than faction ammo, FYI, it's usually just more specialized in some way. Especially with hybrid ammo, in all-around terms faction antimatter is about as good as it gets for close-range.

Not that null isn't awesome, but as a newer player you're probably going to have issues applying it effectively.

Not really. It's 1 jump from Villore where a fair amount of stuff is sold, and 4 jumps from Dodixie, the main Gallente trade hub

Set your market filter to region, not system or station.

Anti-matter has a very short range. Even with rails.

It has the highest potential DPS tho. So I suggest you alter your engagement range (or do some work on your tracking) to do more damage.

Other railgun ammo types will have more range at the expense of damage. Now.. if you want to be further away, a different ammo type thats closest to what you feel comfortable about, will be available from the markets.

There are also a couple of settings that will affect your market purchasing & viewing options

On the main page you can set your browsing range from station to region
There is also a small checkbox on the bottom (forget what it says specifically, sorry not in game atm)

On the settings tab there is a [filter by skills] checkbox
if it's ticked you will only see items you have the skills to use
bad for browsing, but good for stopping you buying things you cant use

It says "Show only available" iirc, meaning that any items not available in the region/system (depending on your filter) will not be shown in the market at all. I always leave this unchecked so I can see items anywhere, whether or not I can purchase them nearby.

Rules of thumb I've always lived by when it comes to ammo choices (specifically hybrids)...

- Blasters: Antimatter and Null
- Railguns: Lead and Antimatter OR Lead, Javelin, and Spike


Reasoning:

Blaster range, even with "perfect" skills, is very short and a loss or gain of 1000 meters isn't really worthwhile compared to the loss/gain of the damage.
For example:
With level 5 skills, an Atron using three Tech 2 Light Neutron Blasters and a single Tech 2 Magnetic Field Stabilizer deals...
- around 180 dps @ ~1000m + 4700m falloff using Tech 1 Antimatter.
- around 120 dps @ ~2000m + 4700m falloff using Tech 1 Lead.
- around 75 dps @ ~3600m + 4700m falloff using Tech 1 Iron.

NOTE: Antimatter has a -50% range penalty while Iron gives a bonus of 50%. Lead does not alter range.

Tech 2 Null ammo is a different matter as it greatly extends both optimal range and falloff while maintaining reasonable damage... with a small 25% tracking penalty.
Example: same skills and fit above does ~160 dps @ 3200m + 6500m falloff with Null.


With railguns I have always found Lead to be my ammo of choice for most engagements (PvE and PvP). It offers no range penalty/bonus (though, it does cut weapon power consumption by half) and deals a reasonable amount of damage. However, I would advise to keep some Antimatter handy in case something gets too close.
When you gain access to Tech 2 railguns though... you can replace Antimatter with Javelin ammo. It has a higher range penalty compared to antimatter but adds a 25% tracking bonus.
And to cover very long range look at Spike ammo. It adds +80% range and deals damage similar to Lead but has a 75% tracking penalty.
