not here to rage or rant or anything, and i realize the dude had combat probes, but, whenever i saved a wreck as a location and warped to it from outside the mission, i was always pulled to the beacon (trying to kite the rats etc).

i was roughly 150kms from the beacon and the dude landed right on top of me. is this normal game mechanics?

It could be. If the mission had been completed and he then probed you down, it is easily possible that this is normal. If it was actually him decloaking after running to you in a covops, its easily possible even if the mission was not yet turned in. Without more info, its hard to say.

Depends on the mission. Some are in deadspace and some aren't. Were you behind an acceleration gate? If so, that would be highly unusual. If you weren't then he would indeed land right on top after probing you out.

No, I've definitely probed down missions that land me on a beacon (repeatedly) instead of a probe target w/o accel gates

If it was a cloaky prot, how could you tell he didnt just slowboat over to you?

If no acc gate, he will land on the beacon unless he chose to warp at distance. If he warped at 100, then it could have been possible he landed more than 150km away from you. If you were near a wreck, he could have warped to the wreck and land close enough to point you.

One of the things that affects whether or not you warp into the beacon or not is whether you're in fleet or not. If you are fleeted, you can choose to Warp Squad at 100. If the mission is one where a solo pilot would end up at the beacon, even when they chose to try to warp at range (those types exist, as you experienced yourself), he will still end up at 100. Bet this guy was boosted or had backup.

If you don't get the option to warp-in at X km, then you will always land on the beacon.

At least this was the case last time I noted. Mechanic may have changed since.

Like Stein said, he probably just slowboated to you.

Can't warp around inside deadspace...
