Hey guys,

As some of you may already be aware from the press release on www.ccpgames.com, the World of Darkness MMO project has been cancelled, effective today, April 14, 2014.

While this is a sad moment for those affected, this puts us in a far stronger position to devote more time and resources to the EVE Universe and our projects therein.

You can read the full press release on our website here, and if you want to discuss it, please do so in this thread to keep discussion focused.

We'll also be answering questions here as and when we can, so please feel free to ask if you have any queries.

Thanks.

Well, I'm stunned. Even though I never expected to play it, I Also never thought it would just get killed.

Welp.

I had the feeling that you guys might have bitten off more than you could chew, to borrow a phrase.

Sad, especially for those who lost their jobs, but at least it's good to have closure.

Atlanta did what looked like some very good work on environment creation tools. Any chance that that work will be salvaged for use in EVE/DUST, or is it all being written off?

Care to expand on this?

Yeah, I'm already being called out on reddit over it. Such is life.

Feel free to call me out on this, but out of respect for those who have been let go in Atlanta, and their families, I wasn't prepared to let rumors build over the weekend before we could speak to people, and whoever was posting information was wholly irresponsible and completely wrong in doing so.

There's a time, a place, and a proper procedure for doing stuff like this.

A case of failed management, in my opinion.

My sympathies to everyone who lost their jobs; it's never easy when that happens, especially when it's due to no fault of their own.

Falcon probably shouldn't have given that denial, knowing it would still be there to be read when WoD would inevitably be canned, both because it had the potential to give false hope, and he will no doubt take a slight hit on his credibility for future postings.

8 years of development time wasted that could have been spent on eve? GG.

The Coreli Corporation is recruiting.

So are you going to spend any resources on fixing Eve now, or are you going to continue tweaking dials on the Titanic while developing console games?

You're all out of excuses now, bar the most obvious one - 'we're too incompetent to save Eve from stagnation'. Either admit to that, or do something.

that's a shame .. but on the plus side more dev's to work on fixing eve's myriad of problems .. perhaps even WiS could be worked on now .. and maybe making more ships in eve and fixing the dodgy ones...

T3's need to be versatile so no rigs are necessary ... they should not have OP dps and tank

ABC's should be T2, remove drone assist, separate HAM's and Torps range, -3 HS for droneboats

We're trying to make sure that as much of the talent as possible from the WoD Development Team is kept on board, and we're exploring the option of moving people onto EVE Universe projects. That's all we can say on the situation right now. Smile

Glad you guys finally cancelled this thing, as it was crystal clear years ago that nothing was to come of this project.
It's a sad thing to see community/PR managers keeping to the "it's fine and making progress, we're just refocussing" line for so long because the plug hasn't been officially pulled yet due to whatever legal/investor/management reasoning.

Best wishes to all staff and their families.

This is disappointing. Genuinely disappointing. After the video and tools we saw at Fanfest last years, this is a sad moment.

Hopefully it's only a temporary mothballing rather than a full-fledge binning of the dream. I still believe that CCP can make a WoD MMO happen, even if it's not going to happen yet.

In my opinion, focusing on only a single IP is a risky move: all the eggs are back in a single basket now, and I don't think that's sensible for a company that wants to grow. Even if the IP in question is a successful and growing one like EVE, things change, and diversity is a hedge against the unexpected.

It would be nice to know WHY the project had to be shelved, though. Were the challenges technical, artistic, financial? And what can the community do to try and bring our vampires back from the dead?

We basically just feel that we overreached with WoD in its initial concept and were trying to achieve too much in the first iteration of the project. We've worked hard and adjusted the plan a number of times along the way but felt the project just wan't true to the original concept that was laid out.

The decision was made to cancel the project because we don't feel we met our target of creating a fully immersive experience set in the WoD universe, and felt it was in our best interests to put an end to the project rather than retro-fitting it and re-hashing it further.

Seems fair. Has just starting over from concept been considered? Seeing as all that time and money is being written off anyway, maybe some of the assets could be salvaged...

That's not something we're looking at, but we recognize the value in the World of Darkness IP, and are reviewing the stats of it. No specific plans for anything right now, though.

Sorry I can't give more info. Smile
