Why is the mood so different on the forums than in the game?

Honestly I would take the forums with a grain of salt, new guy. Most people who play eve have never even looked at the forums, and may not even be aware there ARE forums. People on the forums are typically here b/c they're to drunk to undock, and really I think there's probably like 9 or 10 people who even post in the forums and the rest of the posts are their alts.

tl;dr; The forums are silly. Don't worry about it.

Signatures should be used responsibly...

I have been wondering this some time already, but how exactly does this community stay in one piece? On the forums everybody plans on poisoning and nailing each other on the walls alive, but in-game it's one of the most pleasant chitchat experiences compared to other morps.

Is this merely an elaborate plan to kill all hope for healthy gameplay, or is it because some failed election runs to grab seats on their goernment? That I do not know.

All posts and mails screencapped and time stamped, including out of EVE, you will not reverse on me.

Might come in handy!

A reasonable concern, but stick with it for a few years and I guarantee you that you will come to experience, and appreciate, what a wonderous, wretched hive of scum and villainy EVE truly is.

There is this odd assumption that people on the forums actually play Eve.

The forums are not an accurate representation of the playerbase - CCP has said in the past only a small percentage of players even look at the forums. You have to understand that a certain pathology dominates which keeps the majority of normal reasonable people out.

I don't think the Eve forums are that different from most other game forums or the comments section on most websites. Look at the bottom of any news article even from venerable news organisations and the comments are mostly dominated by idiots, extremists and conspiracy theorists, trolls etc.

In most spheres of life there is some sort of hierarchy or system governing how much credibility people are given. For example you know you should probably give at least some credibility to what your university lecturer says because he's been vetted by staff at the university and is likely an intelligent individual with experience and knowledge in their field. You know that colleagues at work who have 20 years experience in the same industry are more likely able to offer you better insight regarding your work than the raving lunatic stumbling around the streets outside the office. Real life provides clues as to who you are dealing with and whether you should listen to or if it's worth engaging with them.

Total anonymity online removes that metric of credibility and allows people to say things and behave in ways they wouldn't in public. It creates a race to the bottom where extreme opinions and behavior dominate and this drives out the normal people that want to talk like adults. Also the dunning-kruger effects means people of low ability/understanding are much more likely to express themselves than those whose opinions are tempered with knowledge/experience.

Basically the level of conversation and maturity displayed by people goes down the toilet leaving just the few people that are willing to swim in **** behind. The stench puts off anyone else from joining in.

If you hang around for a bit, you'll see most of the shitposting come from the same few guys, mostly pushing one agenda or another or following some pattern of posting crap/trolling. Just like most of the people you meet in real life probably seem decent and reasonable, most eve players likely are too. The forums are mostly where the dregs and the marginalised weirdos hang out and shouldn't be confused with Eve-players as a whole.

I'm not sure honestly but it's a great place to start learning how to ignore people that act in a way you don't like. Others get into long back and forths over inconsequential arguments here...I just ignore that (mostly) and go to other threads. I really don't get why people waste so much time fighting on forums but to each his/her own.

For my part, my motivations are fairly simple.

There is a group of people within the game who actively attempt to influence the design philosophy of the game in a direction that is beneficial to them, and detrimental to me. Noticeably, they have become considerably more active, both in their endeavors and in the effects thereof, in the last few years. Because CCP does apparently listen to the forums, despite it being not representative of the game's population at all.

I'm here to disagree with that, to offer a dissenting opinion. To make the voice of my way of playing the game heard, and to keep these forums from becoming an echo chamber of people who want the way I play the game quietly gotten rid of.

That, and I work night shift, and I'm frequently bored.

I love the forums, I love the community, you can say anything you like and people aren't too bothered. If only the same could be said of real life.

Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction...

There's more to Eve than the forums? Wtf. I guess I did think that 15.00 a month to shitpoast on GD was a little steep.

I said it once

"Because of forum alts like me"

But let me elaborate.

Because when youre an ******* in the game, ppl can kill/wardec/etc you.

You can do so with me but as I never log in, have fun with that

And, isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, oooh, oooh, oooh, the sky is the limit.

The forums are less personal, basically. If EVE forced you to interact with players through video/voice, you'd see even less trolling.
