(Mods, feel free to move this if it's in the wrong place)

After having a few days to digest the issues involved, I've decided to take a moment to put my Summit-related issues 'in the spotlight', as it were.

I won't post any private correspondance, so if you're looking for s--- to disturb on any particlar person, you won't find it here.

Recently, there was a kerfluffle in the player Summit channel. The matter was dealt with swiftly, and appropriately, and I have no issue with how it was handled.

What happened afterward, however, is a different story entirely.

Briefly:

Instead of acting in a discreet manner, the Summit mod in question, rather than discreetly and privately dealing with the instigating players, chose to unprofessonally and publically 'call out' the persons responsible, and further refused all efforts to de-escalate and 'go private'.

Graelyn revealed, after the dust had settled, that he had recieved a large number of complaints, about both one of the instigators and one particular mod. The instigating players recieved bans, but the 'one particular mod' apparently escaped punishment.

The reasons for my objections:

(Before I begin: I am a former T-Mobile service agent. I spent two years in a customer-facing position, dealing with many, many customer complaints, most of which were related to the behavior of other agents. I feel that my professional experience gives me a qualified basis on which to register my objections).

First -- if the majority of the complaints you recieve are related to a particular employee, there is probably a damn good reason that they're being made.

Complaints about a particular employee are usually not made without cause. Those that are obviously frivolous can be ignored, but when the employee in question is the focus of enough e-mail to clog an inbox, something is clearly going on with that person.

That such an employee is allowed to retain a public-facing position without further comment speaks very poorly of the management's operating practices.

In relation to the above point:

If I had done what the mod in question did, I would have been fired.

It makes no difference -- none -- whether I am otherwise a good employee or whether my fellow staff members think I should remain with the company; if I presented myself in such a way that I was recieving as many complaints, I would be gone before lunch.

And finally:

Managers are in charge of their business. They should be in charge.

Making unpopular decisions, even potentially destructive ones, is part-and-parcel of managing anything, from a chat-channel in a video game to a high-end telecommunications company. If someone in a management position is unable or unwilling to step up and make such decisions, they should step aside, or delegate to someone who can.

For the above reasons (and several others that will be left unstated), I have ended my participation in the player-run Summit. I will be making use of the official CCP-operated channels, as I have much more faith in the ability of CCP to act in a professional and discreet manner in cases such as the one I outlined.

is this a 1, 10, or 100MN AB fitted to this letter?

File a petition if you haven't already. Copy and paste this if necessary.

This thread is going to get locked for discussing ISD and moderation. So not exactly the best place for it, sorry to say so.

But the words "open letter" in the subject line make this OP important.

Having such vague and scattered details on the issue makes this post a waste of everyone's time. There is no message here, for anyone, outside of those who you don't mention and yourself.

As such, this is therefore, the incorrect channel to voice your concerns.

If you submit a petition, and the GM's responce you get is not to your satisfaction, you can ask to have a supervisor (or whatever CCP GM's call themselves) handle the case instead. I've had petitions escalated and solved when I was not content with the first tier of support. (I'm sure you know this, working on the customer service industry and all)

This is as nice as I get. Best quote ever https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=4137165#post4137165

For the clarification of everyone else replying, the OP is not complaining about a GM. "Summit" is a player-run RP channel, and thus the OP is complaining that a player moderating said channel took actions that they found to be inappropriate.

So uh... bummer? The fact that it's a player run channel makes your whole comparison to ~business~ and so forth fall flat. And with the clarification of what this is actually about I very much doubt you'll find many people who care.

e: Beaten on clarification, rest of the point stands though.

Am I a bad person for caring less after I found out what it was about?

I cannot say with full certainty but I think Crime and Punishment would be the correct forum for this kind of thing.

BoBwins Law: As a discussion/war between two large nullsec entities grows longer, the probability of one comparing the other to BoB aproaches near certainty.

Fall flat? I hardly see how requesting that someone in a very visible public position act in a professional manner 'falls flat'.

t any rate, I've made my statement, I stand by what I said, and I won't respond here any further.

Because a privately run channel isn't a business.

So the complaint here is that a player-run fiefdom is run like a fiefdom by players?

Settle down now Kaarous. We've got no reason to be calling out roleplayers Lol

Of course not.

I just meant that after reading all of that, to find out it's just crying about being banned from a channel...

Yeesh. First galaxy problems.

Roleplayers are the worst.

EVE is a game about spaceships and there's an enormous amount of work to do on the in-space gameplay before players (or developers) are ready to sacrifice it for a totally new type of gameplay - CCP Rise

Creepy enough to keep even *me* out of it.

Really now?
