Why is the mood so different on the forums than in the game?

Half of the trolls here never got past the NPE complexity of the game so last resort to be a "member" of the community they troll their ways here.

But then i came on the forums, it seems like people troll, be hostile towards players for absolutely no reason, lots of immaturity, lots of hate. On some help threads ive posted and read i see people who just comment on how stupid that person must be not to know that, and other similar things akin to that. Almost the complete opposite of the people in-game. Could someone mind explaining this to me?

My experience is almost the complete opposite. lucky you.

The forums are not an accurate representation of the playerbase - CCP has said in the past only a small percentage of players even look at the forums. You have to understand that a certain pathology dominates which keeps the majority of normal reasonable people out.

I don't think the Eve forums are that different from most other game forums or the comments section on most websites. Look at the bottom of any news article even from venerable news organisations and the comments are mostly dominated by idiots, extremists and conspiracy theorists, trolls etc.

In most spheres of life there is some sort of hierarchy or system governing how much credibility people are given. For example you know you should probably give at least some credibility to what your university lecturer says because he's been vetted by staff at the university and is likely an intelligent individual with experience and knowledge in their field. You know that colleagues at work who have 20 years experience in the same industry are more likely able to offer you better insight regarding your work than the raving lunatic stumbling around the streets outside the office. Real life provides clues as to who you are dealing with and whether you should listen to or if it's worth engaging with them.

Total anonymity online removes that metric of credibility and allows people to say things and behave in ways they wouldn't in public. It creates a race to the bottom where extreme opinions and behavior dominate and this drives out the normal people that want to talk like adults. Also the dunning-kruger effects means people of low ability/understanding are much more likely to express themselves than those whose opinions are tempered with knowledge/experience.

Basically the level of conversation and maturity displayed by people goes down the toilet leaving just the few people that are willing to swim in **** behind. The stench puts off anyone else from joining in.

If you hang around for a bit, you'll see most of the shitposting come from the same few guys, mostly pushing one agenda or another or following some pattern of posting crap/trolling. Just like most of the people you meet in real life probably seem decent and reasonable, most eve players likely are too. The forums are mostly where the dregs and the marginalised weirdos hang out and shouldn't be confused with Eve-players as a whole.

I'm not sure who you are or where you came from but this can go one of a few different ways from here.

1.) You just gained a lot of cult like followers who are going to hang on your every word from now on.
2.) You just angered a lot of trolls who are going to make your in game life hell.
3.) Nothing.

Now that being said.

Dont't you ever...ever...EVER post something that makes sense or is intelligent in GD again. You're going to ruin it!

I've noticed you being far more present ...
... and far more aggressive as of late.

Well ... far more aggressive ... for your standards at least.

Oh, boy. A thread that isn't locked. I can haz poast!

The answer to your question is that is taks very little effort to pos on the forums and gratification is nearly instant. Playing in game requires effort and a significant portion of waiting.

ie: there are more BitterVets on the forums.

I expect this thread to continue to be, and grow into an even better demonstration of the OP's observation that the forums are littered with hate.

Because in game, I can blow you up to establish my superiority, where as on the forum, I have to show it to you. And what better way to go about that, than to take your argument, fold it on itself, and serve it cold, all the while I force you to wear the "Dunce" cone of shame.

This is as nice as I get. Best quote ever https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=4137165#post4137165

The game is where people go to enjoy themselves. The forums are where people go to ***** and moan and tell anyone who will listen about their ****** ideas to make the game worse.

Think of the game as a penitentiary. Some convicts are in for life and they've been around for a long time, they play cards and power games at the tables furthest back from the guards, other convicts stay clear and show respect. The penitentiary is home. They've got their habits there, and they don't like change. Change is bad, it's taken them years to reach their current status, to establish themselves. Change can only be for the worse.

New inmates now ... New inmates do not know the rules, new inmates talk too much, new inmates do not show proper respect, new inmates threaten the status-quo. New inmates are change. Change is bad. Even worse, new inmates have not proved themselves, they have earned nothing. New inmates need to understand their place at the bottom ... or be dealt with.

The forum is the recreational area where convicts and inmates are thrown together ...

New to the internet?

"The forums" are always a fair bit worse than the game's population.

Which still makes us a damn sight more friendly than most other games. Hang out on the League of Legends forum for a few days, then mentally apply the rule of thumb I mentioned above, that the game is only a bit better than their hideous forums.

At least EVE doesn't have humanoid character models, otherwise we'd have the "adult version" fan drawings to deal with too.

"Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws."

One of ours, ten of theirs.

Best Meltdown Ever.

The forums here were weaponised a long time ago.
There a reason new citizens Q&A has restrictions.
General discussion in particular needs a "Here be Trolls" sticky as a signpost.
The sub forums tend to get left out of it ( bar f&I ) .
