Hi, I did search for this so sorry if this question has already been answered.
(This is an alt)
I want to set up a POS in highsec for R&D, during my search I kept seeing stuff that said you can use a small POS for solo R&D but I don't seem to be able to fit enough structures to fill 9 Manufactury slots, I want 6 Adv. Small / 3 Adv. Med (T2 Frigates/Dessies and T2 Cruisers/BCs) and 3 ME/3 PE/3 Copy slots. I'm not sure if I'll do Invention, probably not though.

My actual set up is 6 Adv. Low, 3 Adv. Med, 1 Adv. Mob and 1 Mob.

Doesn't fit in any of the mediums either.
I don't think a large is a very good idea for solo...

Unless I'm completely mistaken, why would anyone use advanced ship assembly arrays in high sec instead of manufacturing in a station?

The advanced assembly arrays for ships take 10% more material, if I remember right. I hope you took this into account, or your T2 BCs will turn out to be quite the costly experiment.

By the way, you need lots of components for your T2 ships, so a component array is also necessary. That thing has 10 slots, enough for one character. Better build the components in your POS and assemble the actual T2 ship in a NPC-station. 10% less materials used, easy cost-reduction.

Another thing, though: As long as your tower is active and fueled, your POS-shield protects your arrays. So there is no reason to have all of them active all the time... If you're spending all your slots building components, for example, you won't need any other assembly array, so you can shut them all off for the moment. Or if you still want to use advanced ship assembly arrays, if use your slots to build ships you can offline your labs/other arrays instead.

With this you should be able to do everything you want with a medium tower (easy mode) or even a small tower (hard mode).

Ah, thanks.
I kept getting told in game that you'll never find enough manufacturing spots and setting up a POS would be better.
Thanks, how do I lock thread?

Depends on where your base of operation is. If you find some forgotten backwater, you may find stations wtih perpetually empty manufacturing slots. Research-slots on the other hand, are always full everywhere. Without a POS you're hosed as a researcher. (Except for PE research, for some reason you can find at least some empty slots sometimes, but this is balanced out by the horrendous load of ME and copy-slots.)

not true,

look in and around 4 or 5 jumps from trade hubs you will find enough manufact slots l im using a station 2 jumps out Amarr and there are enough manufact slots avail just search. Research slots are indeed hard to find

I had some snarky reply planned here, but then I noticed you just reworded what I wrote with less words and more errors.

"Not true." Heh.

It's not completely true. There are entities out there which offer research services to general public. You just create a corp of your own, pay some neglectable membership fee while joining some alliance and pay slot rental fee every time you are placing research job. Former New Eden Research was one example (it currently operates under some other name). But still there is niether way to make BPCs, nor way to run Invention jobs (without personal agreements with lab's owner, you will have to give him your prescious BPOs/materials, or he will has to grant you access to POS facilities)

I started with a medium. I quickly replaced that with a large after about a month or two. I wish I had just started with a large, as they are a huge pain to replace.

This is for solo use I might add, though I now have multiple accounts. I currently own 3 large.

The tower more than pays for its fuel cost. I've setup a system where the tower can be almost entirely idle, and yet earn enough to cover the fuel cost.

Does it involve mining bitcoin?

No.

I can pay for a tower with as few as 3 slots, though I actually have at least 8 constantly filled.

I think my characters have 60 research slots and 55 manufacturing slots.
