First Time Buyer; Is EvE worth renewing?

I'll give you two reasons to subscribe: traditional subscription model and virtual world.

1. Traditional Subscription model:

You're actually getting content with your fees. This isn't the same sub model as World of Warcraft or The Elder Scrolls online where you pay a huge initial premium price, a sub fee and ALSO must fork out a separate fee for the expansion. You're also not required to purchase previous expansions. Your subscription gives you all the content this game has. Two expansions a year is a great deal.

2. Virtual World:

You're also paying for a virtual world, not just a "game". Being away from EVE is just as engaging as playing EVE every single day. You'll go away for a week and come back to find fictional game news updates (http://community.eveonline.com/news/news-channels/world-news) and the changes as a result of players whether it be war influence or market trends.

This isn't your standard theme-park "single-player with other people nearby MMO". Enjoy it. :)

Hello, I'm in a bit of a conflict over EvE and was wondering if some of the more experienced players could help me out. I'm a first time player who bought a 6-month subscription 4 months ago after hearing how deep of a game EvE is, but in the next two months I need to decide whether or not I want to keep playing. I confess I'm very torn. On one hand I like EvE. It’s a deep and fun experience if you play with the right people. The community in general, disregarding the PvP - PvE arguments, is very helpful and knowledgeable and I love what EvE can do on both micro and macro scales. Yet on the other-hand I admit I have no love at all for subscription models. I feel they are very bad values that offer token paybacks and bare-bone additions compared to the revenue earned. Call it what you may, but for $120 a year I expect quite a bit of content to be added; at minimum a stand-alone $60 game worth. Yet in all the subscription games I've ever tried (EvE discounted because I have little experience here) it's the equivalent of one or two small DLCs a year.

So my questions are:

a.) How often does EvE receive expansions?
b.) Compared to the latest Rubicon, how large are the additions?
c.) How often are sales held? (Like the Winter sale where prices had been reduced 50% iirc)
d.) Has any information been released as to what the subscription money goes toward such as statistical breakdowns?

Thanks a bunch!

"Call it what you may, but for $120 a year I expect quite a bit of content to be added"

CCP have already added a gigantic amount of new features and content. Have you explored even 10% of what there is to do in-game?

From your PoV, what's the value difference between $NEW_FEATURE and $FEATURE_I_HAVENT_TRIED_YET ? Surely as long as there is new stuff for you to do, the difference is moot. Indeed, already existing features will be bug checked, updated and polished.

To be honest, when i first signed up for EVE a few years back I intended to just subscribe, a years subs is about 3 hours real life pay for me.

However after about 10 months of play I ended up with quite a few billion ISK sitting around and started doing stuff like buying rare ships to Station Spin just because I could. SO I started buying PLEX with ISK instead of paying cash just because it started to get silly subbing when I was earning way more than a PLEX every month and it was just building up.I have never needed to pay subs since.

And, isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, oooh, oooh, oooh, the sky is the limit.

While I'm sure you're going to get a lot of resounding answers of "yes" in this thread, you have to understand that the people here are going to be inevitably biased. Keep in mind that everyone you're talking to has renewed their EVE Online subscription.

So, I'm going to add my two cents and say that yes, the purchase has been more than worth it for me. However, you're going to have to make the decision for yourself. It's got a longevity that will last a long time, and it certainly is rewarding, but it's not for the faint of heart.

Also, if cost is an issue, there are two options for you:

1) Change to a 1-year subscription, which will decrease your monthly payments considerably

2) Pay for PLEX with ISK instead of real money, which will decrease how much money you'll have in-game but will also bring your real-life costs to 0.

Hope I helped.

Your questions sound more like datamining than like from a player who isn't sure if he wants to keep playing this game.

Besides you not actually "getting" the game anyway.

I concur with Doireen Kaundur, if someone is wondering if they should bother renewing EVE or not they should let their account lapse and see how long it takes before they're watching Youtube videos and reading EVE related stuff and wishing they were playing again, then you will know if you should renew EVE or not.

(I swear EVE is the first game I've ever played where this was the case, it's almost eerie in a way.)

I have 5 paid annual subscriptions, so 5 * $10.95 = $54.75 per month.

My Internet costs $55.36 per month.

Obviously I think EVE is worth it.

There is the winter-expansion and the summer-expansion. And lots and lots and lots of patches in between.
The size of the expansion is a much harder question. It's usually more changing, improving and expanding on what exists then adding really completely new stuff, I find. And even if they add stuff, who says you will be able to do that as a rather new pilot?
In my experience about 60% of the expansion is irrelevant to a new player or your playstyle (if you don't fly supercaps, then you really don't care what they do with them ), 30% are changes that really pisses you off (because the devs are changing something you worked hard for to achieve. Like reprocessing in the next expansion) and with about 10% you are actually happy. Luckely you usually get enough you out the 10% to still find it interesting.

But I think you are asking your questions way too early. After 4 months you probably only have scratched the surface of Eve. There is so much to do. Your skillpoints will perhaps let you do everything at the lowest level, but not efficient. And being good at something is half the fun.

If you enjoy Eve, then continue playing till you have done it all and have real reason to get bored and need something absolutely new.

Look, you'll start having horrible nightmares, fluffy little kittens pouncing on your dreams all night long! You know how humiliating it is to wake up with memories of furballs in your mouth?!? >.< It's like having a limb slowly sawed off with a dull razor and then you still feel the limb years later, oh the furballs!!! No-no! you must cancel your account immediately! Well... after you send my your stuff. Can I haz ur stuff?

Just remember, if you keep playing, you may attract the attention of *looks around and whispers* ....the 'mothership' Shocked and you don't want thaaat... *slaps the cloaky button and vanishes*

a) twice a year.
b) depends entirely on how you define the word "Content".
c) prices on... PLEX? depends. Sometimes is on sale through CCP, sometimes on sale through Amazon, usually around "patchspansions" and events.
d) Nope. We just go with 50% "keeping DUST afloat" and 50% Al-anon meetings.

Actually, IIRC, DUST is actually making more money than it's costing.

I know, sorcery, magic, etc'.
I was surprised at this myself.

As far as entertainment and services go... EVE is a bargin.

Cheapest local gym here is either $117/mo + $25 signup + $15 for magnetic card or $63/mo if you go for a 24-month package, including the signup and magnetic card.

I asked same question as OP. My time is running out in 12 days or so. I decided to let it run out and do something else as past two months I have done nothing but queue new skills tbh. Maybe break from EVE is good. Hate me away but I kinda subbed to EVE because of promise of WiS... since that hasnt really been successful nor devs even want to continue it, I just chill until something else but "ship balance" happens. Then I surely come back to roam space. Bear

I dont think its worth the money. For my taste the content thats beeing added is not really "overwhelming". The mayor additions to this games in the last expansions:

-3 new ships (SOE)
-ghost sites
-changes to scanning

The other stuff is rebalancing and doesnt really count as "new content" in my eyes. And no ship skins are not new content at all. What they just did was adding new colours to ships which got inspired from here: http://www.eohgames.com/labs/Ships/Aliastra%20Talos

Hell even dust is getting more stuff then eve. The latest patch got them 3 new guns, 3 new suits and the ability to cloak themself. And the irony is that Dust is F2P. So why should you pay for eve which gets less content then a F2P game on the PS3?
