This other thread just seems to confirm that the general consensus among the EVE population is to pop pods as a matter of course.

It occurs to me that people sparing pods, is incredibly unusual in the game, for whatever reasons. The question would be, if you have spared a pod, for reasons outside the immediately tactical, why did you do it? My experience is that no one in EVE honors ransoms anymore, there used to be a small chance, but now the tendency is that it is much more esteemed that one also extorts some ISK before reneging on any ransom negotiations, and a ransom demand is again a matter of course when one party thinks it can extort more. I've yet to encounter anyone who's busy trying to build a reputation as an "honorable" pirate.

So has anyone actually honored a ransom, at least recently? If so, what compells you to do so? Are there any stories of anyone being purposely spared for other purposes? Someone mentioned political reasons in the other thread, not needing to be too specific, what are the stories behind those reasons?

To me, this question is far more interesting than the standard responses the other thread has generated. Small instances of emergent gameplay if you will, given the rarity of its occurence.

There's a pirate corp called The Bastards who always honour ransoms. They accept singing ransoms too.

I'd only pay a ransom to those with the reputation of honouring them which, I agree, is becoming more rare.

Swing and a miss. Try to keep up. Imagine you got their pod pointed. The power is in your hands, you decide to let them go. Why do you spare them? What are the stories around these rare occurences?



It used to happen, but I haven't seen or heard of it in a long time. When it comes to that point, I just say "pod me and get it over with. Even corps that had a reputation for honoring them, usually had a lot of members who didn't. No sense throwing good ISK after bad.

Why would I want to get them home and into a new ship faster?

Then, you didn't spare it. You MISSED it.

I ransomed a guy for his Hulk during a safari.

But I let his pod go because his grandmother died the week before.

And gave him my condolences, ofc, before dropping corp.

After all, I am not a complete [insert armchair psychoanalysis here].

On the pod killing question, I find it depends on the sec status of the space whether you are more or less likely to be podded.

In null, generally people go for the pod too. I also take that approach.

In lowsec, I find that while there is still a large number of gate campers and fleets that will pod you, there is a greater chance that you won't be podded, especially in small gang and 1v1 fights.

I used to pod everything, but the sec status hit and killright became a pain in the backside, so in lowsec I usually leave pods alone unless I can "legally" kill it.

On ramsoming. I don't do it. I either kill the pod or not. I've never come across anyone who honors a paid ransom.

Never pass up a good pissin' contest. That's what I always say.

Not having to grind back from -10.0 again is reason enough to let them go in low. I see no reason to let them go in null or wormhole space.
