Speaking of rage quits, I must share the tale of one that occurred right in front of me.


Back when I was married one of the ex's kids was playing eve in the same room as me. He wanted to do a mission, so I find him and we do a mission. Not enough excitement I guess, so he decides to duel with me.

This was in 2006. Before dueling.

In highsec.

So his ship, a cyclone he spent lots of ISK on, got blown up. It happened right when I was saying "I don't think you can..do...tha"


He was upset enough to pour tears all over local about it. And in response to that, some 2003 player give him enough ISK for 2 ships, making that point that it's only ISK and when a day comes you have lots of it, losing a ship is nothing to cry (in local) about.


So, he assembles the ship and starts buying modules and such and then undocks to go get them...

within the aggression timer which may have had a minute or two left on it.

The outcome, as you can expect, was that he was concorded again.


The next day he has another ship and decides to move all his stuff. I don't recall the reason why he was trying to move everything but it had something to do with the corp he joined. He was too new to be moving IMO but that's that.


So he was on autopilot. There was no WTZ back then, but there was a counter to the problem of it (fit AB/Tank/ or BM).

He was on autopilot and jumped into Amamake. In his "last" ship he had ISK for, with all of his stuff.

Be advised that this was a 16 year old with a lot of "leet" gaming creds. You name it he played it, single player or MMO, and mastered them all.

He was actually jumping up and down screaming "That's it! I'm not playing this game any more!".


He mad, bro.


And I got all his stuff - well... what was left.

I ragequit just the other day.

I was ratting in an Ishtar and walked away from the computer for a few mins.

Came back and an interceptor had me tackled. I overheated my afterburner and put out my ECM drones. I targetted the interceptor and put my drones on him. At this point another interceptor showed up. Right as I start to target the 2nd interceptor I get jammed by 1 cruiser Guristas rat. He then jams me 9 consecutive times in a row @ 150 KM away or further.

So I lose an ishtar and when you lose your ship the item you had selected drops off your selected item sometimes and the time it takes me to pick another celestial and warp off I get pointed and lose my pod.

I don't care about losing an ishtar its not a big deal.

What made me ragequit was the stupid rat jamming me that far away that many times in a row then a stupid bug that made me lose my pod.

I petitioned it and got the typical working as intended reply.

Took a few days off EVE and played RL and other games.

Stupid mechanics and stupid bugs is what makes this game lame.

Not today spaghetti.

Exhibit A for the differences in human beings: If something like this happened to me, I would be laughing so hard I would drop from my computer. On plucky rat saves two player-controlled interceptors. That's great! Lol

Why come to an internet spaceship forum and ask for a lesson in psychology?

To add my 2 cents... I think sometimes we are mad at ourselves when we do something really stupid. One time in null a guy was ratting with a carrier and got jumped by a big gang of frigates. I was ratting when he called for help in corp chat. Like a complete and utter idiot I warped to zero on him, aggro-ed the mobs onto myself and became a sitting duck for the frig gang. In the end I lost my ratting raven but provided enough distraction for the carrier to rep and hold out a bit longer for more organized help which arrived and saved him. I didnt rage as I'm a bit too old for a game to make me rage but I did want to smack my keyboard into my face a bit over being so stupid to warp to zero in a missle-boat against frigs.

I think some people rage over being stupid and dont want to admit to being stupid enough to fall for scams or traps so they cloud the issue with reasons why the other guy had an advantage or why the game mechanics are unfair.

You want this on the synapse firing, or the motivational, stimuli/response level?

Rage quitting is like kicking your dog. You get to vent with someone there to see how truly powerful you are, but in the process you drive true affection away from yourself. However, kick MY dog and you get to see how life is on one leg.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

As someone who had a single seminar about psychology during his second semester at university, I'll give you my professional opinion:

Nothing goes on in their brain, they're simply stupid and far too highstrung.

I would go with this. Only changed it to "they are being stupid and far too highstrung". I raged in WoW sometimes (only 1 rage included outward profanity to other players) and realized it comes from very simple things.

You invest into the game heavily, you do repetitive things you don't acctualy enjoy but you know it needs to be done cause this is how the game works. Then, when someone screws you up, either when you are "working" or "having good time" you get a sudden surge of irritation.

People expect results, and at one point the expectation is so strongly founded that they act irrationally when something goes wrong. "Being stupid" is the word. The bar, I guess, on when you rage, get irritated or just indifferent is hanged on different levels for different people. When you rage in a game it's a good indication you should either take a break or leave it altogether.
