Where were the mobile warp disruptors in system?

In a null system with one in local I saw 4 mobile warp disruptors on d-scan. They never displayed an actual au distance as I moved around and I didn't find bubbles on any of the 4 gates.

If they were showing up on d-scan they were deployed somewhere, right? Were they perhaps being used to protect the entrance to a mission site?

They were most likely set up as traps around a POS. You see this every now and then, a corp will bubble up around their POS and then litter it with cargo containers so anything warping in will be de-cloaked and then popped by the POS guns.

It's also possible they were set up to protect a POS or station deployment.

Lots of reasons they could be there.

You're young, you'll adjust. I'm old, I'll get used to it.

Shocked

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the Mobile Structures able to be scanned down with probes?

Only if you have combat probes. OP probably didn't have them.

Ahhh, thanks.

Then there's no problem pinpointing their location.

I know sometimes in Null, people will put them up around a wormhole entrance to, giving them a chance to go somewhere safe, or form up to fight anything coming out.

Found this out the hard way once when was playing around with scanning.

Also you might find them by warping to the ore and ice fields. Bubbles can give the mining barges that extra few seconds needed to GTFO.

I've read before that they're sometimes deployed along routes between celestials to pull ships out of warp, but I haven't actually seen that done. I don't do much null, but I've done some wormhole running. I've had that same experience of seeing them on d-scan and not being quite sure where they were.

How common is it for them to be placed along a line between celestials?

Bubbles cannot pull someone out of warp between celestials.

They were probably set up to trap someone warping to the planet at a certain range from the most likely entrance gate. The hope would be that the POS guns kill them.

CCP should add more NPC 0.0 space to open it up and liven things up: the Stepping Stones project.

I have heard people claim that. I even believe I probably used to say things like that sometime in the past. There are, however, people who believe that such things may just be possible if you're ******** enough to want to try.

As for OP, bubbles get placed in all sorts of locations for all sorts of reasons ... much as previous responders have outlined.
