Wow, they just had a quake like this not long ago! Well, I for one hope for the best for them.

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- A powerful magnitude-8.2 earthquake struck off Chile's northern coast Tuesday night, and officials ordered an evacuation of coastal areas before an expected tsunami. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the tremor, which also shook buildings in parts of nearby Peru and Bolivia.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported the quake at 8.0, but later upgraded the magnitude. It said the quake struck 61 miles (99 kilometers) northwest of the Chilean city of Iquique at 8:46 p.m., hitting a region that has been rocked by numerous quakes over the past two weeks.

Waves measuring almost 2 meters (6 1/2 feet) already were striking cities on the coast, and authorities said a tsunami was expected to come ashore later. Local TV images showed residents evacuating calmly.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued an alert for all of Latin America's Pacific coast. Chile's Emergency Office said a large tsunami wave was expected to hit the island of Juan Fernandez out in the Pacific just before midnight local time.

Hola:

Im a Chilean player, i live in Viña del mar (a city near the shore), now we have 2, quakes in a scale 7.6 (mercalli) like 10 minutes ago, in the same location.

For my fortune, im very far from the earthquacke location, but for protection protocols, all classes were canceled, now it seems that i will have a very long weekend (maybe my university will be used as a shelter, is a damn fortress...).

However, the quacke of 4 years ago was worse, many people died because our president said that was secure to be in the zone, tsunami came and devastated some towns.

People gets even more paranoid when things like this start to happen, so the panic is natural, even when someone is instructed to be under a solid object when a earthquacke manifests.

I'm glad to hear you're not in the area the quakes have happened! We have them here, too although not big ones since God knows when. I live near Seattle, Wa. USA but our quakes usually don't happen more than 5. something and even then, it's far and few between. I firmly believe we'll get ours some day.

I hope your family is OK and out of danger. And you're right, panic is inevitable for many people, no matter how many times they've been through it, or maybe even because of that. Panic is like a disease as well, one starts to panic and it drives others to do so as well. I hope Chile's people come through OK.

So as not to derail, I will say that my thoughts are still out there for all who are struck daily with new tragedies.

Panic can be protectionary in nature. If a Tsunami is approaching a coast, what do you see the animals doing? They are running in the complete opposite direction, predators beside prey.

What is the disease, is the inability to controls ones actions when fight or flight stimuli are presented to one self, and yes the improperly controlled actions/reactions of one individual can spread like a disease. That being said, improper and unplanned reactions (reflexs even) can sometimes save lives as well and cause great disaster. Knowing when to flee can be a life saver, being able to maintain composure and being able to identify how best to flee increases the odds even more so.

Indeed. The panic response can be our undoing though during a car crash. When a crash or head-on is inevitable, we "tense up" and that can prove fatal as our bodies are not "going with" the forces occuring. This is why the drunk driver usually lives, ironically. They do not even realize what is happening, so they are not tensed up at all and the body just naturally rides through it.

Hence why I put reflexs in parentheses and ended that sentence with 'cause great disaster'. Your example is prime in that sense.

Yeah. I edited out the word "but" out of my posting as it sounded like I was countering your point. Oops.
