Regarding the selection process, that was a guaranteed failure, we all knew half way going in what stories were going to be pre-selected. Anytime you make things into a popularity contest you're never going to get what is the best potential content.

The story selected was, by far, the best. No other story came close, except xttz's - and that's because xttz's was similarly galactic in scale and actually about interesting events.

There's a reason those stories won, and it's not that goons voted for them. It's that there are so many goons because those stories are compelling and drew them into the game.

Okay, don't know why people are saying the artwork was terrible, I thought issue #3's artwork was excellent.

As for not drawing from player stories... I disagree, I think we've done some excellent things worthy of recording, and the intrigue and drama we get up to is totally worth chronicling. But I'd agree that this account was too literal and too true to one person's version of events.

I'd go with "Inspired by events that took place in EVE Online". collate the escapades, blend them into fictional alliances and strong personalities. Chronicle the adventures of a pilot (or group of pilots with distinct and interesting personalities) from their first day in the pod to the height of alliance leadership, fall, rebuild, try something else, etc. No real names, no real events, but definitely inspired by and based heavily upon those real names and events to create an experience that's recognizably EVE and awesome without being identifiably the story of any given person.

Maybe mention them from time to time. It'd be a strange capsuleer who went for very long without ever hearing of Chribba, for example, but never as a protagonist.

Oh: and maybe get the writing done by a player. Or at least have a player vet it and consult.

Now this is a story I can see being a great stand-alone comic. (As in, just a single issue encapsulating the whole story.)

Let's face it.
Even though the target audience is likely existing Eve players, there is zero doubt that CCP wants this kind of story-telling to appeal, and hopefully attract, non-players to the game.

And what resonates more with more Eve players, and probably non-Eve players?

A story about some guy meta-gaming a really stupid and archaic mechanic that the vast vast majority will never ever experience, or a simple well-written story about some shoot-em-up bang-bang that every player across umpteen games and genres understands.

Run a series of comics, each being a one-issue story, each highlighting a different part of the gameplay experience.

Run one from the point of view of the FW guys.. Just pick one system, and cover a day in the life of these guys.
Run one issue that covers the last big supercap null fight, with all the ship losses, and the ramifications.
Run one issue about some miners getting ganked in high sec.
Run one issue about some wormhole eviction, or the battle to protect the system. (Had my own experience with that. We rolled the hole in the face of an invading fleet, with them literally parked outside the wh)

DON'T run some story because some clown needs his ego stoked further by having his sycophants upvote the story.
Just get talented people you trust, like I dunno, comic book editors and publishers, to choose the best stories.

Not Good~

Story was confusing. Art was a bit confusing and the color scheme didn't draw me in. I was never clear on who was who or who was where (etc.).

TBH - if you are going to pick true stories, don't let the public vote on it. Yes, the downfall of BoB is a classic EVE tale, but it makes for a lousy comic book...

...because it's' the climax of a much larger story, and a little underwhelming at that.

Next time, I would suggest having some the guys who wrote the Eve books choose which true story would be good for dramatization. The Downfall of Bob is good for a documentary, not for dramatization. Or whoever was the crew of the old "I was there" trailer. That trailer has a nice beginning, middle, and end, despite being so short.

Shoot - your old "I was there" trailer would have made for a one-shot story!

Overall it was alright.
I like the idea, the whole process of making a real story into a comic. I really enjoyed reading many of those real stories during the voting process.

I read all 4 comics. I have purchased other Eve merchandise but I won't be buying this, sorry.

The story in the comic was somewhat difficult to follow at times as others mentioned. The art was hit and miss for my eyes (I don't normally read comics, though).

It felt weird seeing mention of alts and jump clones in a story environment. Would be good if when specifics of Eve are included they are consistent with the actual gameplay.

The story wasn't really exciting enough to put into comic form for me, so the comic was somewhat boring. I think the process for taking stories was good, but in the end I think at least the top 10 highest voted stories should be considered and those used in the decision making process of what to put into a comic. I think some stories might translate better then others into this format.

With a different story more suited for a comic, I might have different thoughts on the whole thing. The story worked well in text, but I just don't feel it worked well in a comic.

I would of rather the author use EvE stories as inspiration for a comic in the EvE universe.

I really wanted to like these, I really did, but in the end I thought they were "just ok". The sudden cuts between scenes, changing the artists each issue and trying to condense such a big story into 64 pages made it hard to follow. And I say that as someone who knows the story pretty well so I pity the comic book nerd who doesn't know anything about Eve and picks this up and tries to understand what's going on.

I want to see CCP and Dark Horse keep making comics about Eve but I'd prefer it if you guys put the True Stories thing on ice for a while and maybe just collaborate to bring some existing chronicles to the comic format, or writing new content but keep in in-house and in-lore until you guys really get a handle on it.

The first three were good, with the 3rd one standing out as the best artwork of the series. Thoroughly enjoyed reading through them and could not wait for the final episode. The fourth was a failure of epic proportions, that blew chunks all over eve onlines rep for high-quality graphics.

I mean come on, the fourth comic looks like all of the characters are from a badly drawn Frankenstein movie, hardly recognizable from the 1st comic (Go back and look at the frame of Haargoth in the 1st episode, then compare that to one from the 4th, if you can figure out who is Haargoth in the 4th that is!) , and half of them dont even have the pupils of the eyes filled in!

Ship proportions are all badly off. Are those Naglfars or Tornados? Because its so badly drawn that the accents that differentiate the two ships that are normally visible are just not there at all. The 4th artist has taken the iconic minmatar vertical hull and left behind a giant steaming.....

Seriously, the 4th comic needs to be destroyed and redone by the artist responsible for the 3rd comic. It was not a good way to end the story - with (worse than) bad art.

How did CCP let that one past?

I want to see more eve online comics, and I think updating the existing chronicles (and maybe some of the science fiction articles) into this format could be quite popular. Just don't bring that last guy back.

I too felt that the story was all over the pace and frankly I didn't like the art at all but hen again I wouldn't expect anything less from a story based on a game mechanic designed by an idiot.

I like the artwork and style of the first 3 comics very much. I absolutely don't like part 4 it leaves me with the impression of someone without enough time to do it right had to finish it fast and did so without much love for the project.

I'm looking forward for more Eve comic books.

Some thoughts :

  • Changing artists sucks.
  • The way the story is told is very confusing, hard to follow.
  • It seemed very "small" compared to what these alliances are ingame.
  • Some art was nice, some wasn't.
  • The whole "jumpclone actually being an alt" thing was confusing for players, but maybe it makes more sense for non players ?

Overall it was OK but somewhat disappointing.

To be honest, it didn't feel like story from EVE, it was just something that some people from alliance did. Surely they wouldn't act like this in the real EVE Universe. The in-game slang and all breaks the immersion. I mean, the people usually imagine these stories would look and go very differently in the real EVE Universe, with more scale and depth.
And like others said, I would rather see the awesome chronicle writing more often, something that really brings me into the Universe and immerse.

But all this aside, I am really happy that this project is on and I would definitely like to see a continuing, just more interpretation of what would it all look like within the real EVE Universe.

I really didn't care for the artwork in them.

I think ye need to get whomever in the office did all the dust 514 digital painting to do them instead of some mortal.
Seriously, that artwork is what caught my eye in the first place and led me to eve.

The story to tell was a good one as it symbolises everything EVE stands for. A harsh, backstabbing universe where your friends can turn out to be your enemies overnight.

What I have a problem with is the design of the comics as a whole. I'm not a big fan of comics so maybe I'm just 'missing' some sort of appreciation for the art style and method of story telling. But I can say this much; had I not been an EVE Online player who knows the basics of the BoB story I would not have understood jack sh*t of the entire story line. Hell some parts of the story still left me confused as to what was going on.

The story kept bouncing back and forth between half a dozen locations and characters. Some of those characters were apparently the same person but alts (???) and others were jump clones who jumped to different locations between two panels (????). By chapter 4 I had completely lost track of what was going on.

Even while knowing characters like The Mittani, none of the characters in the comic were remotely memorable. With every panel I had to wonder if I saw that character before and what his part in the story was.

And to top everything off, just when the story reaches its peak and the trap closes that's when the comic ends?! What? Why? How? Seriously? No aftermath? No mass BoB exodus? Not a single explaination of the ramifications of this huge event? The entire story ends with a 'and so Bob was disbanded. THE END!'. It makes absolutely no sense from a story telling perspective. Like a dozen pages are missing or something.

I don't know if that has to do with the text version of the story, Dark Horse's lack of understanding of the EVE universe, Dark Horse's apparent lacking ability to make comprehensible comics for this universe or a combination of these things. But if these comics are meant to entice new players to try EVE they are failing insanely hard.

I really loved it, please, do more!

The artwork was really good, I really liked how they depicted the Walking In Stations, all these drones and rooms, and baseliners.

Oh, baseliners!

The 4th is my favourite. I really felt sorry for this poor dispatcher, really loved her facial expressions, the accent on how rude and ignorant capsuleers are... priceless. I really recommend you to include more baseliners into the series, show the regular mode of life, show that not all capsuleers are just flat rude elitists.

Really looking forward for the next story.

First of all, I liked it. Seeng a comic related with eve univers is really a good idea.

1. As a frequent comic reader of Marvel-DC and some İmage comics, I have to say you can give atmosphere better tho still the storyies seems fine. Though can be improved with better story flow and instead of 4 issues you can get in deep with dividing 6-7 issues.

2. Please use Coker and Dallocchio's art as they are awesome and I suggest to use cover artist of the issue 3. İt is very floving and suits better to the Eve Online universe. But whatever you do please not use the last issues artist. eve online is far more serious than some tintin child comic with big heads and stupid noses...

3. Try to obtain new stories and not just limit yourself with like the stories on true stories page but rather try to obtain information on some historical events like MAX campaigns or B-R or asaki etc... And try to write their backstory with relevant arts etc.. and explain the wars. add some fiction stories also.

4. Eve Onilne is a dynamic universe so I think we want to see some high Sec empire stories, I for example want to see jamyl sarum's return from death etc.. or some old stories like guristas seperation, story of rabbit and the other guy in guristas or blood raiders or minmatar's libeartion from amarr empire.. These are good stories.

To sum up all, New Eden itself has got a tremedious potential for stories and comic. So please not limit yourself with the "true stories" but also try to explain some history of empires or some historical events in eve null-sec alliances itself.

Thanks you for the feedback, There are very varied opinions here, which is good. There's obviously interest in original material from EVE's backstory, which is good to know.

We will be doing a roundtable on EVE Comic books at Fanfest, and of course, will follow discussion here on the forums on the topic. We are generally happy with Dark Horse as a partner, and with the lessons learned from True Stories, hope to continue delivering illustrated narrative from New Eden for your reading pleasure.

personally i liked:
- the idea
- the style
- that it was tried to incorporate having alts in a way that kinda works, without talking about players

i did not like:
- the story being told only from one perspective
- additional elements that where added to the story (protecting miners???) that uhm don't make sense from either direction
- the part of the story that was created to justify haargoths actions (no one took everything from him)

i feel that when creating the comics it might have had been a good and fair idea to do a bit more research to tell the story in a more neutral way.
