Connection Issues with local WiFi ports being blocked (Trend in US)

There seems to be a hatred of people using WiFi to connect to server apps lately, several off the locations I used to log in to on the road to use client/server apps have blocked the ports for such - Skype, TS, various business apps, as well as games clients are being blocked - what's up with that?

At first I didn't think it was as wide spread as it is, since it started with a single location I go for coffee and would log into to various apps, EVE being one of them, while I did my coffee... then about 5 months ago, EVE wouldn't connect one day - I tried a few other apps, and found that nothing that needed to connect to a server would work - server not found, etc.

I did some digging and found they "had replaced something" in the WiFi/ISP the day before. I used to work as a network admin years ago and so I did a bit of troubleshooting and pretty much pinned it down to blocked ports - odd, because the EVE client does open, will patch, but will not connect to the server for game play... many of my apps do this.

I figured it was simply this location, but I have tried several of the same and they all has the same issue, apparently is was a national choice to block these ports on all their locations (Panera Bread).... so I checked out other places, and since then I have noted that a lot of other places are doing the same, the most recent today was Toojays... same issue.

There seems to be this trend to block ports all of a sudden? - anyone privy to this info? or know why? - and more important a work-around for it?

I had considered a mobile WiFi but all the services here are bandwidth limited unless you want to pay a huge fee for unlimited (it's about the same as a monthly car payment)... so that isn't really an option, at least on my current budget.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated, and I am a little disturbed that US companies are opting for this kind of thing - I mean CCP and other games are companies that have the right to "Do Business" via the web, if other corporations are blocking access to them doesn't that seem to be some kind of unfair business practice? ... anyway, thanks.
