the changing artist thing really confused me a few times. same with the jumpclone thing.

oh, and please give me some wallpapers in comic style :D

I got some cognitive dissonance from the story never being completely IC or OOC. Sometimes OOC banter (like in the beginning of the first book) could be passed off as IC, but when characters started talking about their alts, that was immersion-breaking for me. Also, yeah, visually the jump clone thing didn't make a lot of sense at first glance.

Also, my personal feeling is that changing names of characters and organizations while still telling the same events would help make the story more immersive. Not to take away from the great stories being made in the game, but we all have our preconceived ideas about the characters and groups portrayed in this particular story, and that colors our interpretation of the events in it. Certainly if I were to watch an EVE TV show or something I wouldn't want to have in-game alliance politics going on in the back of my head while watching.

Finally, I believe I saw in one of the panels someone mention a "star gate", while in-game and in most other lore sources it's "stargate".

But overall this was a very cool project and I look forward to more EVE stories in more media.

The imagery in the comic book was nice, the story was ok'ish but VERY hard to follow. I guess that's a matter of taste but i didnt like the super short dialogs and random scene swapping without a clue who was now talking to who, its fun to leave some guessing to the reader but on the other hand, it felt a bit ADHD (no offense) and I never felt 'sucked into' the story.

Some more information (like a schematic with the corp / alliance structure of each alliance / coalition involved)would have been nice

It was pretty sweet!

A bit short though, I don't know how much I could've paid for it, and having the first one for free was certainly a good idea.

i would have liked to see a eve lore comic to establish the eve universe via the new media first, before starting the true stories stuff.

Life on the first colony ship which went through the wh, first capsule, first dust merc.... so many topics to pick from. Pick one of the more popular chronicals and build on top of it. If you do this you won't have to explain on every second page how all the eve things work, what a jumpclone is etc.

but then again i don't read comics so it could be just me expecting something different from this media type. (must have been the first comic i read for 20years or so)

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

The issue I have is that comic books are usually about GUYS DOING THINGS! WITH RAGE! AND ANGST! AND VIOLENCE! AND EXCLAMATION POINTS!

EVE, well-- for all its thrills, is grand, grandiose, and sometimes rather languid.

I feel like taking a little bit less of the usual comic style, and interspersing more corporate/alliance/territorial imagery might help give it more of an EVE feel. If, for instance, we saw more cluster maps, more grand armadas, and a bit more knowledge of EVE demonstrated...

Honestly it was pretty disappointing. Out of all the amazing stories out there you pick one of the most boring. Ugh

Fleet composition and battles that are a little more realistic to the game, maybe? The most jarring part of the whole thing for me was in the first issue, seeing a fleet composed of nothing but dozens of Arazus, and then having that fleet get ripped to pieces by a couple of Wolves, a Vagabond and a lone Maelstrom without anybody even exclaiming "Sensors are being dampened, I'm having a hard time getting a lock."

Don't be afraid of the technical jargon, either. Spaceship pilots are GOING to have their own impenetrable technobabble, and it's okay to dust the dialogue with it here and there. I'm not talking "He's redboxing. Point... Stitcher needs cap" "Copy, two cycles down chain" here, that's boring. But a delicate sprinkle of references to "cap warfare" "ECM" or having an irate squadron leader order his wingman to "keep your transversal up, moron!" just before that wingman gets splattered wouldn't hurt the dialogue and would provide a little extra engagement for the people who understand the game.

Also, the "@#%&!" stuff. Either put in the swearwords, or don't have the characters swearing. Nobody would notice the latter, and the target audience won't mind the former. But having the characters cuss and then resorting to a ridiculous string of symbols by way of censorship is the worst of both worlds.

Matthias has a point, it may also be worth changing the names so as to increase the neutrality of the account. It won't harm the story, and the people who know their stuff will still know who the stand-ins are representing, but it will bypass the slightly jarring juxtaposition of a supposedly serious sci-fi setting with your standard anarachic Internet in-jokes. The story of TEST, for instance, would make for pretty decent TV, but it might detract from the verisimilitude of the dramatization to render their full name in-character.

I'd much rather CCP return to writing Chronicles than watse time with half-assed tales of old in Comic Book format.

If you need to generate revenue, and I understand that completely, put thge various Chronicles in a "EVE Source"-like hardback with art format, and I'll happily spend vastly more than I would have to aquire these silly comics.

Chronicles got more players to play EVE than comic books ever will, and if you're smart enough to sell the lot in harback, it'll make you alot of money too.

I'm not a comic book connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination but...

IMHO they are bad, really bad. The art is bad, the storytelling is bad, and more often than not I really didn't have any idea what was going on. There's no continuity to the story at all. I suppose it might make more sense if you were playing the game and derping around in Null back when BoB was still alive and well (as I wasn't), but I'm guessing probably not.

Adding insult to injury, is that EVE background stuff was way off as well. A couple of Goons went after a lone Hulk because it could have "millions of ISK worth of modules in its hold"?? And at some point a Maelstrom solo's a half dozen Arazus?

I wanted to like them, I love reading about the lore and history of the game, but I only read the first two issues and after that I was so put off that you'd have to pay me to read 3 & 4.

I really hope there's a different group working on the EVE TV show.

Honestly, using stories from in game kinda ruins it. Writers and creators can make their own stories in the eve universe that will inevitably be better than the reality of in game stories, it doesn't need to be "true stories" because honestly no one gives two ***** outside current EVE players wanting to see themselves aggrandized even more in smug comic book form.

Get rid of the whole true story concept, and let writers make new stories in New Eden. Why do I want to read second hand a story I already know? It's like watching a re-run of a show I don't like.

That said, let it be more in game, the idea of alts and jump clones is tricky to manage while trying to make the universe believable (as in, not a video game).

Essentially the problem then, is you're trying to create a story within a universe that is believable, with characters who operate outside it, which as others have said, breaks the immersion a lot, and makes it seem like its a game, which, would be fine if it was about the game and the players. However it tries to not be, and it just doesn't work out that well.

SO, Tl:Dr, remove the true bit, and just let writers make stories in the universe. Having comic versions of the chronicle is a lot easier/more enjoyable than player stories.

i did not like them, neither the art nor the story telling was good.

The art looked like it was just the 3D ingame models with a half assed comic shader from photoshop slapped on them, i was looking forward to a hand drawn comic so that pretty much ruined it.

Lots of grrgoons in here.

The artist for the third comic was by far the best out of all of them. The art on the rest (especially the last one :cripes:) was definitely not great. Storytelling had its ups and downs - I feel like a bit longer of a series might have been more appropriate, as there's a lot of material to cover. Also keeping a bit more eve-reality in there would have been nice - fleets of arazus is /really/ silly, at least give them a stealth bomber escort or something :v

In the end, though, I've preordered the book on amazon and generally enjoyed the whole process. Looking forward to seeing what else comes out of the CCP media machine - I'm sure nobody would mind a story like this told in the fashion of one of your ever-excellent trailers.

I didn't enjoy a single issue.

Artwork was terrible. Writing was terrible. It hardly held true to EVE in terms of storytelling. The way in which the voting was done was already lopsided and pre-determined.

I just can't take this seriously, as an EVE player. I won't be buying these, and I've bought a lot of other CCP merch. This is just inexcusably terrible. Get rid of the 'true' part and like others have said, have your own writers write stories for them to illustrate.

Nice experiment in thought, horrible execution.

I was once involved in a wh fight where we had 5 ships and the attackers 6.
The drones from my Domi took out 3 recons while I was jammed, and we drove off the remaining attackers with the loss of one of our BC's.

It was more exciting than , "Alliance director presses a button and wipes out a huge alliance. The End."

1) How did you do? Overall, I would answer that this was done well. I read all four chapters, and was immersed in the first three. That's not half bad, but it is quarter bad. Specifically, the last chapter's art direction was terrible. EVE is many things artistically, but cartoonish is not among those things. With the ease in which you can access and manipulate the famed graphics of EVE, there is NO excuse for how poorly-drawn and generally un-crisp the last chapter was.
2) Voting and submission was executed brilliantly, great job. However, steps may have to be taken in the future to ensure that stories from all play styles are incorporated into the "winners circle".
3) Having read the whole thing, twice, I can say that attempting to incorporate metagame into the story just confuses that which actually happened. I think that the graphic novel approach is a wonderful way to illustrate the universe and bring characters to life- I love the cockpits and the crew of the ships and stations, the unsung victims of all capsuleers.

I must say that despite having a firm grasp of what actually transpired during these events, the actual execution lost me. The changing art made characters hard to keep track of, the jumpclone mechanic was adapted well but not very well illustrated, and in general it was hard to determine what exactly was going on.

I do, however, look forward to more stories being told this way, hopefully in a crisper, more homogeneous way.

What I liked: The third artist. Whoever they were, they did the best out of all of them. Get more from them, please :) I also quite like the concept in general - EVE has such a vast potential for amazing stories that putting them in comic form should work quite well.

What I didn't like: The other three artists (especially the last and second ones. The last one was ugh and I often had no idea what I was looking at with the second artist) The story was really hard to follow, and this is after having read the original "True Story" and getting familiar with the chain of events.

I highly encourage more EVE Comics, with a couple of suggestions.
Keep that third artist if at all possible.
The stories need more work to make more sense.
I saw an earlier suggestion in this thread that the comics be stories set in the EVE Universe, but not necessarily be player stories. I realize that CCP greatly values and focuses on player-driven content, but the truth of the matter is that the Chronicles are far more interesting (and many would be much more thrilling to see in comic form) than the disbanding of BoB. When you get down to it, all that happened was one director got frustrated with his alliance and took it down from the inside, with prodding and help from The Mittani. While from an EVE perspective, that's a huge event and worthy of attention, it doesn't work so well in a comic book. You have a large catalog of thrilling and fascinating stories that can be made into comics - it might be best to go with those.
If you really just want to focus on things that actually happened in EVE, live events might also be another thing to look at - Operation Highlander could be a very good story to put into comic form, for example.

tl;dr I want more EVE Comics, but CCP should think about taking stories from more places than the "True Stories," and should not shy away from fictional stories that could end up being much better.
