As long as we are on the topic of the skill que, let me add that you need not only watch it, you have to be smart about it.

Back in 2006, I would find modules and try to use them, not be able to, then go find the skills just to try it out.

Now that might construe some nice whimsical exploratory approach, but let me tell you kids what it's like have 81M SP and hardly and specialization.

It was not until late 2008 (after an 18 month hiatus) that I found some direction but the introduction of wormholes and new exploration had me training science, hacking, etc to all 5s. It was not until the last couple of years that I got all armor and shield tanking up to level 5s down the board.

But what use is that anyway? Show me a ship that has bonuses for both? Show me someone who can fly two ships at once.

I rolled an alt a few weeks ago who, given the knowledge I have now, as up to SoE lvl 3 missions in under a week (I'm no power-gamer) and only lost one frigate.

Therefore I'm the best example of how not to train skills. My advice to noobs is always this:

- decide what your "game" is : PVe, PVP, piracy, exploration, industria, etc
- decide what your style or "shtick" in the game is. You like big ships? Large fleets? Hit and run small gangs? Tackling? Vacuuming up belts or sneaking around for the precious stones?
- Decide what ship will best fit and how it applies to your desired role and style. Study the specific fittings for it and check the variants, if any. There are wormhole fits, PVP fits, mission fits, etc. Know the fittings.
- Check on the info for the ship and study that Mastery tab. Use the mastery tab for the core requirements of the ship and it's weapons and tanking. For example a gallente ship that has repper bonuses is going to have repair modules and hull upgrade skills listed in the 5 levels of mastery tabs.

The Mastery tabs for ship requirements is pure genius. You need only deviate from it depending on your style, hence the need to study the fittings.

Now this might be hard to get noobs to understand. "Mastery tabs"? They will ask. But I think the time spent on making sure noobs don't make the kinds of mistakes I made is paramount. It will cut down on their ship loss significantly. I hope to see the NPE address this better in the future.

Does anyone know what the impact is of not having paused it?

Last time I put some implants in I didn't have to pause. It was a recent change.

Not sure about implants such as +int etc..

same with me, i woke up in the middle of the night when i realized that i didn't paused (and apply) my training que when i injected +1 implants...

maybe it's a new update! Smile

Jumping to a jump clone will require me to pause the queue. I can't jump otherwise.. but there was no such popup for implants.. so maybe you're right?

Amateurs!

Over the years I've had many alts and restarts and if, for whatever reason, I'd stop playing (them) for a while they would have less SP than they should have had given their age. For me that's enough reason to not play them anymore (or sell them) and start all over again. I'm talking about chars with 15-20+ mil sp.

Been playing for 10 years, I keep switching characters.

That sounds like masochism, Gregor. I couldn't do it.

and you are merely grasping the idea.

btw, worse than lost SP is finding a skill trained to V like someone else pointed out, i have gallente battleship V and electronic attack frigate V... i must have been pretty tired after work to set that to train and call it a night.

and yes, im aware i had about 30 days to check the que and change it... but who does that? Blink

Nothing at all wrong with having gal battleship V.

That's a lot of decision a new player has to make without having any experience to base them on. How is he to decide between pve, pvp, trading, industry without having tried anything other than some tutorial missions? How does he know whether he likes big fleets or not without having ever been stuck in an 8h tidi fight? How is he supposed to know what ship is best for the job - and still will be by the time he has finished training for it?

My advice for a rookie is to just train whatever he feels like on his main and try all the things. Purchasing focused characters and training specialized alts a year or two down the road is really no big deal but first he has to survive the first few weeks without quitting and collect some experiences to figure out where in EVE he might want to go.

The tutorials do give a taste of the various activities. The best thing is to ask. And yes you describe the more "fun" way but I've seen it get un-fun fast when the noob goes up against what he thought was a match and gets peeled like a banana and is taking a pod ride home saying in NPC corp chat "WTF he was hitting me for like 2000 HP each time and I was doing 230 I had the same kind of ship - I died in 10 seconds WTF?"

Or they earn enough faction to get ahead of their own skills in missions (just because you can run a L4, does not mean you should) and become very bored having to warp out 10 times in every mission.

If we can help them not get turbo-PWNED in PVP and not get bored to death in PVe they might stick around.
