Where's a Good System to Sell My Stuff? (or does it matter?)

I don't want to be a trader (at least not with this character), but I want to sell my loot with out taking major losses because I happen to be in an inactive market with only a small number below market losses.

Having just finished the business agent tutorials, I occasionally see stuff where when I sell, I see a message like "98% below regional average", which makes me think it might be worth finding a better place to sell.

To the extent that I've read and browsed through the Market Details and looked at price histories, i think that the above message could be, at least on some occasions, a false indicator. But even so, if my intent is to be a mostly PVE player, than I'm wondering if it could still be worth the effort find good selling locations.

I saw in the ISK Guide three "busy systems" listed: Jita, Rens, Amarr - is it wise to occasionally pack up my loot, head to those systems and sell in such a system? Or is that mostly just a waste of time?

And does faction matter? I'm Gallente, and I may (down the road a bit) pursue factional warfare (not sure that will be on Gallente's, but I'm thinking that by default) and will likely do Faction specific arcs, so I expect that I'll eventually have some significant negative standings for a couple of the factions.

The three "busy systems" that I saw do not include any Gallente systems - if faction does matter, is there a Gallente equivalent?

When in doubt...to the trade hubs.

Major trade hubs:

Jita - Caldari main trade hub (Also the world's trade hub for EVE)
Amarr - Amarr main trade hub
Dodixie - Gallente main trade hub
Rens - Minmatar main trade hub

There are also several smaller trade hubs in EVE, Hek for instance is a secondary trade hub in Minmatar space and heavily used by people with lower security status as it's near low-sec and itself is only a 0.5 system.

Also, don't take too much note on the "98% above regional average", as it's a player driven market, people can actually manipulate the regional average price if they really wanted to.

Thanks J'Poll, Robby, very helpful information!

Especially like the marketdata website. Truly amazing how much 3rd party activity there is around Eve!

This is very often a hint that any such Buy Orders are WAY below even the mineral worth of the stuff and, in fact, set up for exactly this reason: Mass buy orders for virtually nothing that are collected once per month or so and reprocessed for the minerals.

There is some detailed advice around but a good - basic - rule of thumb is to sell Meta 4 stuff via sell orders and reprocess everything below for the minerals.

Edit: Besides the four (five) Trade Hubs mentioned above, one for each of the mayor Empire Factions, each Region tends to have a Trade Hub as well, usually easy to find if you look for the System/Station in your Trade Window that has the most orders of any common module.
Be aware, however, that despite being the Regions“ Trade Hub, they might be very much backwater to the "real" Trade Hubs.

My advice to my friend that just started EVE and is running missions and overwhelmed with what to do with all his loot was simple:

Filter your item hangar to show anything worth 100k or more (Valuable Items) and put all that into a "Market" station container.

Reprocess everything else. Take the resulting minerals (and anything that won't reprocess) and drop them in the "Market" container.

(Obviously, don't reprocess your spare parts--put them in a "Parts" container).

For me, if I'm going to Right Click > Sell Item, I better be getting at least 100K for it.

As a general rule of thumb:

- You will get top dollar for an item if you are selling it where it is used/consumed/destroyed.
- You will get a good percentage of top dollar in a trade hub
- You will get better returns if you are further from where the item is produced/dropped (in most situations)
- You will get pretty bad returns if you are in a very quiet area of space.

As an example, consider Mackinaw hulls. (Mackinaws are an expensive mining ship).

You will get the best results selling these in systems where there is a lot of ganking activity, but not so much that people feel that using a Mackinaw is foolish.

You will get somewhat decent prices in trade hubs.

Mackinaw production isn't all that localized so there's not much to consider there.

- You will get better profit on large quantities in areas with massive demand while less profit per unit due to competition.

CCP Greyscale: As to starbases, we agree it's pretty terrible, but we don't want to delay the entire release just for this one factor.

It is tiny.

IIRC, daily trade in Jita is 22 trillion. Daily trade in Dodixie is 3 or 4 trillion.

Daily trade in Ours is a hundred billion or so.

It's also a good idea to open your star map and set the option to view the systems based on exploding ships. The system where ships explode a lot is also a good location to sell items. With a bit more research, one could find major alliance staging systems, those are also good places to sell stuff. Mission hubs are also great places to sell stuff. Look at some SOE security mission hubs for example.

I have been disappointed at the low level of turnover of mission-related paraphenalia in Apanake (an SoE mission hub that has 1/3rd the number of players as Dodixie at most times).

Ammo does move (slowly) but neither mission ships nor ganking ships seem to move fast there at all. Prices are somewhat high but far from amazing.
