And then users would create features on their own which through voting process would possibly come out in next expansions??

Like linux basically.

Im sure we have a more then willing and capable community to do it.

Their source code is directly linked to their income. It has real value, not only in terms of intellectual property.

Why doesn't Microsoft release their source Code, or Apple, Sony, Nintendo, etc?

Open source is only one model and doesn't work for all situations, particularly monetization.

CCP provide a developer API that allows calls to the server to gain data. They don't need to give away their source code to allow third-party apps.

Also, their source code might be embarassing.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Then anyone could make a private server, like with wow, which probably would be really bad because a big part of eve is the same universe concept.

btw: the source was leaked years ago.

Did you hit all the branches of the stupid tree as you feel through it?

Why would they release the source code? It makes no sense as it opens it up for hacks, copying, and basically anything people could rip out of it to make new games.

Given all his recent posts I think he did, and then went back up for another ride.

Because most of those "features" would just be botting. Which is rampant enough in this game already.

The Abuser "leak" in 2008 (which I assume you are referring to as it received the most publicity) was only client code, no server code. Dozens have done the same as Abuser did back then (decompile the python portions of the client code) in the years since.

The source of EVE can be found in PVP. PVP is both the Alpha and Omega of EVE. All serious PVPers know this to be true.

Is this like serious comedy?

Brace yourselves. Riven is a "Think Bot". It's the wave of the future, bots that have "ideas".
Once one is let loose, there's no stopping it. It's similar to a virus, except for one thing.
It never gets anywhere.

Geee I don't know why do specialized industrial companies not share their reason of success and well being for everyone to compete with them?

I'd appreciate some interface open sourcing that doesn't affect gameplay but say, spreadsheet rendering or their 3d models under certain conditions to make the 3d printing properly legal. But I completely understand that they don't do it.

Apple and Microsoft do release some source code whenever needed. One of the main benefits of OS X is actually that a part of the source code of the OS, Darwin, is freely available; http://www.opensource.apple.com/

However, what may work for them may not work for CCP.

Hey, how about you make your proprietary software open source so me and other hobbyists can tinker with it and never pay for it again?

No. Just no.

Because OS means that you will never have to pay again. Some parts in EVE are already OS. Without assets you wont do anything with just the client code.

But looking here, i don't think CCP would benefit in the short run from this. Maybe in the long run but that would need documentation and code cleanups and time something CCP probably don't have.

Valve just made the Direct3D -> OpenGL layer public. Lets see you compile and hack the game with it.
