I was looking into Fanfest this year, and I noticed the Charity dinner is in benefit of Get Well Gamers. GWG is a charity that donates video games, and game systems to children's hospitals.

I'm a nurse who works for a children's hospital, who has received video game systems from GWG. It doesn't seem like a lot to me and you, but those video games mean the world to the kids on my ward. Some of them have extremely painful, awful medical conditions that no kid should face. Some are terminal, and don't have long for this world. The treatments they face are sometimes worse than the disease itself. Just being able to sit down with "my" kids, forget everything, and just play Mario Kart for a few hours means a lot.

We're a charity hospital. There's no way we could budget for those games. Most of the families there have no way to budget a luxury like a PS3. Healthcare is expensive, and pediatrics even more so.

I sent CCP a personal thank you, and now I'd like to thank the community. Sure, we're a bunch of dysfunctional, arguing neckbeards (and neckbeardettes), but damnit, we can do some good in the world.

Thank you again CCP, and thanks, EVE players. You've got an old nurse in tears over this, and I'm proud to say I'm a member of the EVE community.

Edit:

As the father of a son with severe Asthma that can, at times, prevent almost any even remotely taxing physical activity, I can relate to that very well.

And yes, when we play a bit together, my little one can even forget that he is close to suffocating at times...

Love you mass murdering neckbeards. All of you!

Before I head out for work, I want to share a couple of specific stories that stand out in my mind.

The first one, I had a little guy on my ward, around ten years old. He was fighting off a nasty case of leukemia. Now, if you've never seen someone going through chemo, it tears a person apart. Chemo drugs work because they are just barely less poisonous to you, than they are to the cancer. The poor kid was so weak and burned up, he'd been in a wheelchair for over a week. I remember wheeling him out into our common area (where we keep the games) for some fun. I head back to my station to do paperwork, and about ten minutes later, I hear a commotion. I duck out to see what's going on, and my patient was up on his feet, all smiles, punching the air. He'd beaten our reigning Super Smash Brothers champ, and was beside himself with pride.

Second story, I'm again doing paperwork in my station, keeping half an eye on the kids and visitors in the day area. I glance over, and a father and son are playing Madden. I didn't think much of it till the next day, when I was reviewing charts. It turns out, the kid had risky heart surgery scheduled for that evening, and he didn't make it. One of the last moments those two had, was having fun playing games together.

You guys and gals are helping make these things happen, and I just wanted to make sure you know. You're making a difference, and it's awesome.

Now, I think there's some Grr Goons threads to post in, and too many non-compliant miners to gank. Fly fun, ya'll! o7

Just remember while you are at work giving from your soul to care for sick and sometimes dying children, the fact that you blow up other people's pixels in a video game about blowing up pixels makes you a terribly bad person and you should feel bad (according to the wise forum-folk o EVE GD).

A heartwarming story. Thanks for sharing it.

As someone has said before: EVE players are nice in real life because they get to be douchebags towards eachother in the game. (Not the exact same phrase, but you get the point Smile)

And this right here goes to show just how wrong people are when calling all CODE members a bunch of lowlifes with no heart... You couldn't have proved them more wrong... +1

(not to tarnish your in game rep or anything you big softy P)

Quoted from Doc Fury: "Concerned citizens: Doc seldom plays EVE on the weekends during spring and summer, so you will always be on your own for a couple days a week. Doc spends that time collecting kittens for the on-going sacrifices, engaging in reckless outdoor activities, and speaking in the 3rd person."
