Wardrobe change without a forced portrait change

Just bringing this back up.

The fact that portrait must be updated when changing anything in about one's appearance is a deterring factor in buying or using any clothing.

The suggestion:

Body piercings, tattoos, and hair style changes require a portrait change -clothes do not.

Currently it's like having to change your drivers license or passport photo every time you change your clothes, etc in RL.

Unless there is a technical reason why you should update your portrait, then I don't see why it should have to be done each time a change is made to your avatar in EVE. I can understand why it was done in the old character creator when players had no physical avatar appearing in a 3D environment, but the way it's done right now doesn't make any sense to me.

Nex (Cash Shop) / Aurum - removing sand from the sandbox since Incarna. Currently the only use for aurum is to buy virtual items in the in-game store, but Cockerill expects to expand its uses in the future.

This used to bother me, but now I don't think it's such a big deal since your pose and expression are retained among other things. It's not like it takes a long time for the portrait to update, anyway.

I agree that it would be nice to change clothing without having to update the portrait please.

I see where you're coming from, and I am guessing this is the argument CCP is using internally to not spend the resources on fixing this issue.

The problem is this:

Portraits are currently the only visual tool we have to identify ourselves to other players. Even if WiS actually becomes a reality, what will identify you to most other players at all times will be your character portrait. To be required to constantly change this identification tool is a problem.

You will notice that it is nearly impossible to get the exact same photo twice. Even when making no visual changes to your character small changes in facial expression, eye direction, and zoom are present. The fact that I want my photo to be reliably recognizable to friends and enemies alike means I can never make any change to my character's wardrobe again. In fact, because I regularly use jump clones my character isn't even wearing the clothing you see in my photo above and I can never put it back on because it would require a photo change... See the problem?

Its good to see some conversation on this topic.

I agree to this with you guys.
However, I do think that certain facial changes should force a portrait change. I know it is not like in RL, but there should be certain concordance between the portrait and the actual avatar. These changes, including, but not necessarily limited to piercings, hairstyle, glasses or monocles, should trigger a new portrait capture.

More or less like a passport photo.

Obviously you don't change it every time you change clothing, but perhaps if you acquired facial markings or were forced to wear spectacles full time it might be wise to update your photo (apart from the fact it costs a fortune to get a new passport of course).

UPDATE:

Since the Crucible expansion your portrait settings such as pose, lighting, and facial expression are not retained. Additionally, the rules on photo creation have changed.

This means its near impossible to get a photo close to what you had before.

I had to redo my portrait because Crucible gave me a shirt, and I had to go take it off again and resnap the portrait to stay sexy. Very inconvenient.
