Actually, just PC with Rift, and PS4 with Morpheus. You will need a VR headset to play Valkyrie.

That's interesting, I hadn't heard that at all. Do you have a source?

Jester linked back to a 2011 post of his where he noted that CCP was taking on debt to fund the development of DUST514. So this might be CCP admitting that the profit they predicted from DUST isn't there, and they don't know when it will be there.

It wouldn't necessarily mean the end of DUST514, just the end of a years-old projection that the investment they made would have a fairly rapid return.

I'm going to put my money on this. Dust just didn't integrate with EVE with the depth that CCP eluded to and overall was a disappointment. I haven't played it since after fanfest last year but it was just a sub par FPS with a New Eden skin over it as far as I could tell. It seemed like a worse version of Planetside 2. Maybe that's not the case anymore but I some how doubt it.

Moreover with the Playstation 4 out unless they port it to PS4 and SOON the playerbase is going to continue to deteriorate until it's gone.

Dust was a grand idea but it was built for a console that was obviously at the end of its life cycle which was poor planning enough but to top it off it appears as though CCP didn't have any plans on what to do with the game after the PS4 dropped. They just hoped that the playerbase would continue to use their ps3 to play that 1 game which is just not the case with console minded people.

It's not Dust. Dust was not in R&D, it was a realised asset on the balance sheet. It has to be either Arcana, WOD or Valkyrie. My bet is WOD.

Yeah I believe Dust is what you would call a liability on the balance sheet not an asset. Lets all face the facts. Dust is a garbage game that they half arsed. They promise meaningful integration into two different perspective of gaming and you ended up instead with two seperate games integrated by a common chat room. Furthermore instead of releasing it on PC like they should have ( DUST IS NOT A FKING THREAT TO EVE SUBS AND WOULD LIKELY BRING MORE IF IT WAS RELEASED ON PC) they released it on PS3. PS3 had terrible GFX and a customer base that has the attention span of a goldfish. To top it all off I suspect they realized that the technology on a PS3 is in fact incapable of the kind of integration that they really envisioned between EVE and Dust.

Failed experiment, failed game, good concept, record bad implementation.

Sorry double post. Also, it has to be Dust. Read the 2011 article. CCP clearly took out 20M loan for Dust R&D. They capitalized the code last year, and this year a 20M derealization shows up on the books. You make the connection.

My Goldfish took offense at that. he also said to point out that most Goldfish prefer CoD becasue of the fishy nature of the acronymn and a true fish with never play a game with a water challenged name like "DUST".

It's also possible they wrote-down these assets so they'd have a corporate tax loss to carry forward and apply against future earnings. I'm surprised that most people don't realize this is a paper loss...

For those betting on Dust...
In his most recent CSM status report he writes:
Quote:
Finally, one item that I don't think I've ever mentioned in one of these updates: the CSM and the CPM (Council of Planetary Management, our DUST 514 counterparts) have a private channel in which we keep each other up-to-date on things going on in our respective worlds. I mention it here because it's one more thing that a potential CSM member needs to keep track of and allocate some time to. There continues to be a lot of interlinking between the two games so it's very useful for the total group of player reps to keep the communication lines open.
(Emphasis his)
And keep in mind that he knew what the 21.4M are about, when he posted that.

OK so from CCP financials

On page 22, you'll find CCP taking a 21.4 million USD "derecognition" hit. The note for that says the following:

During the year the company assessed its capitalized development assets and determined that a portion of those assets would likely not have future economic benefits. IAS 38 requires that such assets should be derecognized and removed from the balance sheet. The expense related to the derecognized assets are presented as part of research and development expense in the statement of comprehensive income.

So taking bets on what has been written off. Clearly some piece of code was expected to be very valuable in the future and is not much less so. What do you think

1/ Incarna
2/ Dust
3/ WOD
4/ Other

Ripard Teg (CSM) seems to believe there will be an announcement at some time in the future (fanfest?) to explain what is going on.
http://jestertrek.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/derecognized.html

I am going with Incarna. Even though WOD development has been gutted and most of the staff fired, I believe CCP may still be holding out some hope they can get some money out of it. As for Incarna DEAD. Saying that as Incarna was pretty much WOD code beta it could be both are one and the same from a code asset point of view.

I'm going with dust after reading the article on jesters trek as dust isn't paying it's bills and won't ever in its present form, though to be fair everyone knows wod is dead.

Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction...

Could be that "Ambulation Technology". Only CCP knows how many assets was created for Incarna and WoD (they both shared many things, even some WoD combat animations for brujah and vampire stuff appeared in Incarna test client). But after 3 years this technology may already be outdated for brand new MMO and WoD can be built with something else or even with external engine.
But that is just optimistic guessing (I don't want to believe that CCP will get rid of WoD).

The non-CCP (but EVE based) MMOFRPG "Pathfinder Online" actually had to completely change their animation engine half way through development due to licensing issues. I think the story was one of the more successful franchises using the engine bought out the company supplying it and stopped issuing licenses for competing games :D

My point ? just that a lot can happen in 3 years in this industry.

Most likely WoD...

I doubt they'd write off Incarna as it's already at least partly live. WoD is an easier write-off, as it's likely CCP finally realized how much development costs such an MMO brings with it. Dust and Valkyrie are much, much cheaper in comparison to develop and maintain.

That aside, i do get the feeling that Dust will be announced for either PS4 or PC at fanfest...

If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all...

Dont think its dust otherwise the development for new content would have allready stopped. Next tuesday the game gets a new patch with new suits etc. and CCP knows how to "motivate" Dust players to spend money. Like early access to better suits, skillboosters that increase the SP gain rate and so on. Just look at their last even where the goal was to get 1 mil kills in just a weekend. According to CCP the players reached up to 2.7 mil kills. The reward was 2 mil SP for free+ bonus SP if you had a SP booster on during the event and ofcourse CCP put a "special" booster on the market which gives twice the SP gain rate for the weekend.

If the game would target a broader market, it would be a better investment for CCP. That is all I'm saying.

You realise that you don't actually need the OR to play the game? Its also like you don't need a gamepad to play GTA's PC ports: It makes the game easier to use, but isn't an absolute requirement. Plus Valkyrie is stated to have joystick support from the get go - I asked the Valkyrie devs this in person at the CCP meet in London.

I also saw people who had never heard or played of EVE before having a go and actually enjoying it, especially from that Valkyrie is slated (subject to change I must vehemently add) to be one of the 10 launch titles of the Oculus Rift.

People will play Valkyrie - it has numerous markets tagged already, rather than just the Nerds that play EVE Online.

Aside from anything else Sony are getting into the VR market now as well ...

Valkyrie has been announced for Morpheus and the PS4. (yes, it's an exclusive for the OR. On PC. But also on the PS4 with Morpheus. Don't ask me how that works)

The coke head in marketing told them about some magazine article he stumbled upon saying that "consoles were the new thing" and although he didn't know what a console was that they better start throwing money at it right now!

So $1 million of development and $20 million of blow later, it turned out that FPS console shooters are as common as trailer parks in Mississippi and worth even less.

Maybe they should stop worrying about finding "the next big thing" and focus on putting more money into what has already proven to work (i.e. EvE)?

This is truth. All other speculative opinions are just about who is pissed off at what project the most.

There is no relationship between writing down assets and assigning value to them. It's corporate taxes people!
Do you all honestly think that any assets are being accurately declared?

If you can reduce your profits on paper by calling your vacant lots as "Environmental reclamation projects" it means you are a good creative accountant, not the next Al Gore.

This has nothing to do with what projects are abandoned or when.
