How does a player find these new sites that involve hacking? I have watched videos and it seems to be found through the onboard scanner of you ship but I have looked in high sec low sec and have only ever seen one site listed as a secret research facility.

ghost sites are rare, so you just keep roaming and looking.

Highsec is so populated, they'll usually be hacked as soon as they appear and they are very rare in highsec to begin with.

Lowsec depends on where you are looking, but you can roam though nullsec and find them. Wormholes too.

In terms of finding them, it's generally easier if you aren't using probes in each system to locate other exploration sites.

My general approach to exploration in low and null is to roam through a series of systems noting what anomolies and signatures are in system. Then I'll go back and scan down systems that I think look good for exploration; and after doing that, go back and run the sites.

That way I get eyes on a large number of systems relatively quickly and can go straight to a ghost site if one is present.

If you normally scan in each system before moving on, there's a good chance someone else will find and run the site before you even see it.

Not saying that is necessarily the best approach to exploration, but it works for me.

since their release i've found and ran three ghost sites in wormhole space. i can only imagine how much more rarer they are in k-space.

Funnily enough I've seen three ghost sites in hi-sec, and that's without really looking.

If you do want to run one, watch your back. In hi-sec at least, they are very fast on the trigger, in my case about 30 seconds after I started scanning.

Boom, there goes my Ishkur.

When I find one I always let people on local know, you never know they might have better luck than me.

No idea what's in one due to aforementioned explosion.Sad

They are anoms. They are rare to start with. Then when you do see one, it's probably been run and cherry picked by someone else. And when it hasn't been cherry picked, you probably get a BPC worth 3 million.

You know you're in a ghost site when you warp in and the theme from Ghostbusters starts playing, and the hacking minigame is a level of Pac-man.

Who put the goat in there?

To the best of my knowledge, Ghost Sites have an internal timer that is activated when someone warps to the site.

Its extremely unlikely that someone will have "cherry picked" the site, because as soon as someone warps to it, it has a very limited life-span measurable in mere minutes before it self-destructs.
