OK so from CCP financials

On page 22, you'll find CCP taking a 21.4 million USD "derecognition" hit. The note for that says the following:

During the year the company assessed its capitalized development assets and determined that a portion of those assets would likely not have future economic benefits. IAS 38 requires that such assets should be derecognized and removed from the balance sheet. The expense related to the derecognized assets are presented as part of research and development expense in the statement of comprehensive income.

So taking bets on what has been written off...

Drones, they're gone. Both sorts, before you ask.

Battlecruisers have been recognised as an irredeemable deadweight balancing error. They're gone.

7500 systems is too many. It's a pain in the ass to write the node balancing, and let's face it, they're all pretty much the same. We're going down to 4 hi-sec, 4 lo-sec and 8 0.0 regions. And they're just going to be called after their NPC inhabitants.

The 20 least used modules are getting cut. Everyone say goodbye to the Cap Flux Coil. The Dual 150mm Railgun. The meta 1 small MWD. And 17 more that you never heard of. They're gone.

Racial haulers were always dumb and made no sense to anyone ever. They're gone. It's just ORE now.

COSMOS. That's gone.

And every time someone complains about the list, 1 more thing gets added.

The paper states at the bottom of page 23 that in 2012 millions were lost to depreciation of EVE online only. Then in 2013 it states Dust 514 and EVE online are responsible for the huge million dollar hit.

Also the paper shows the retained earnings CCP had and it was above 30 million I believe and they used that to cover the huge loss.

The only hard part is the loans CCP has to still pay off, without the nice extra income CCP was to make off of DUST, but they have enough cash and earlier profits to pay those off. It just more boring now, instead of fun and unpredictable.

So what you're saying is that Valkyrie will easily have several millon customers since it will probably be a marquee title for the platform, which means that revenues could be somewhere in the region of $100M.

What I'm saying is that I am throwing random percentages out of my ass.

But the point I am trying to make is that they are targeting a niche audience out of a niche audience, and asking that niche of the niche to lay down 500$ in hardware to play it.

Once some of you start spending your own money instead of your parents, like the rest of us do, you'll realize that spending 500$ on computer games, when it could go to your kids, house, retirement, etc, is a ridiculous proposition.

If the game would target a broader market, it would be a better investment for CCP. That is all I'm saying.

inb4 - yeah im all jelly because im poor.

As been stated, but i'll reinterate. If you check the eve Valkyrie sub forum you will get a lot of information, as well as a lot of 'we can't comment yet' what is known is:

Valk will be rift exclusive, this doesn't mean "You MUST have a rift to play" it means if sony makes the magic box 3000 VR headset that Valk will not support it. That's it.

Valk is going to be on pc, because the rift is.

There is an article that says Valk is played without a rift in the office, because ccp has a limited number of rifts. So if ccp has 20 devs, and 5 rifts, then 15 devs have to test there stuff out somehow. So this means in theory you can play without the rift. But this is not yet confirmed

There is joystick support.

The rest is petty much unconfirmed.

Now based on the fact that the Dev kit for the rift is $300, my guess is a rift will run between $100 and $200, from what I know dev kits tend to cost more as they have the tools needed for development.

Ok with that, back on topic CCP doesn't have to tell us anything about the loss, and it is prolly something meh.

What a waste of resources.

Fck you, Valkyrie is awesome.

Even if your (incorrect) position is that the Valkyrie audience is far too niche, how can it possibly be worse than WoD whose target audience is angsty pre-teen girls whose attention has almost certainly switched to a new fad by now.

Edit: I mean seriously, the only way WoD will ever be viable is if it was released as a facebook game yesterday. Of the choices presented, how can Valkyrie possibly be worse than that?

Given that most of the Georgia team was sacked, I know exactly what the World of Darkness universe is: vaporware.

Pretty sure part of the contract with CCP's acquisition of White Wolf was that they actually had to use the WoD IP. As it seems to be vaporware at this point, the IP may go to a company that won't utterly fail at doing something with it. I'm sure the universe will be fine.

It would be particularly ironic if this happened and then was followed by a patch to revitalize wormholes.

Jester linked back to a 2011 post of his where he noted that CCP was taking on debt to fund the development of DUST514. So this might be CCP admitting that the profit they predicted from DUST isn't there, and they don't know when it will be there.

It wouldn't necessarily mean the end of DUST514, just the end of a years-old projection that the investment they made would have a fairly rapid return.
This is sound reasoning on the face of it, but $21.4 million is quite a chunk of change. Seems rather large to cover this bet. Must be something else involved, or...they just were overly-ambitious and borrowed too much money? Maybe some bank was overly-optimistic and loaned them too much...curiouser and curiouser.

EDIT: I hasten to add, I have no problem with any corporation taking risks and endeavoring to expand their interests.
I don't think CCP is obliged to soak its life into EVE Online exclusive of any other endeavor. And, yes, if they want to risk
it all on a roll of the dice, and lose EVE with everything else in the process, as much as I'd miss this game we love so
well, it's their company to do with what they wish as they wish.

The White Wolf LARP people in my area are dysfunctional and crazy. They have had in game disputes with regard to masquerade that led to real world threats of legal action, court restraining orders and threats of violence. A dispute over the "death" of a character in game between two flat mates led to one leaving town and moving interstate. I have been led to believe my local group are not unusual.

Dust would have been much more successful on the PC. They shot themselves in the foot making it PS3 only and alienating the majority of the EVE player base that WOULD have played it otherwise. I know I would have bought it if it had been on the PC.
