It is stealth, but I sense the whine as well.

The only thing that comes to mind would be Carbon. I'm guessing none of their games now has a chance to use that piece of technology. Dust went to ps3, WiS in Eve is indefinitely sidelined, and WoD is on skeleton crew, and valkyrie won't need it either.

What is Carbon.

okay so the ambulation portion of Carbon is the writeoff?

It's definitely not the pizza. That went for 2.5 million.

A former CCP employee wrote into the Giantbomb podcast last week basically stating WoD was canned. Hopefully we'll know more soon.

What a waste of resources.

And pray tell, why is a waste of resources? And have you tried the game out or are you speaking from a perspective of one that believes that they know a game from a simple video?

Games that require specialized hardware haven't been successful for 15 years.

In the early to mid 90s every flight simulator required you to use a joystick, racing games had steering wheel controllers and you had headache-inducing shutter glasses for your 3d games - but that's an era that has been over for a long time.

These days any game that relies on the gimmick of specialized hardware to set itself apart from the competition will fail (and no kinect is not even remotely comparable).

WoD, which I really want, is most likely. But they are still hiring in Atlanta, so idk, they just had a bunch of jobs open up there a few weeks back and still have a spot open for a database admin. In addition, whatever has been written off is already canned. You don't write something off then can it next year. So whatever it was is already gone. That means its not Dust (sorry dust haters) If they closed down dust you would see it on this years finances. As that's how it works. When you pay your taxes you fill out your info based on what you did last year.

My guess is it was either a massive rewrite or another project they found out was not going to to work and killed it.

WoD is a possibility, but if they are still hiring.. and they should be in fiscal year 2014 now anyway, so who knows.

The industry as a whole took note, (and you can see this on steam) that CCP is changing it to suit more of a DayZ thing...

Sadly, WoD is here to laugh at for a long time!

While I like the idea behind Valkyrie, I'm not sure, as of yet, that it is a good business decision. They're basically betting the future on a new piece of tech that isn't really proven to have staying power, and if a better version of the Rift comes out from a competitor, they basically shot themselves in the foot. It's early enough in the tech's lifecycle that I could see this easily happening at this point. It just seems premature, when CCP can't really afford to bet the house on yet another project that's a failure.

my only issue with this is, as I said above, the loss is from 2013. So whatever was killed has been killed already. It could be WoD related, which would be why they had the layoffs in dec, as that part of the WoD project was beign scrapped. But then they hired new people and have a spot open now. So honestly, if WoD was going to be canned, it would not really relate to the 21m loss, as that would relate to this year, not last.

Incarna is the most likely.

Bear in mind, depreciating the value on the balance sheet doesn't mean 'We've thrown this away'. It means 'We don't think it's worth X amount any more'

With no significant implementation for the last 3 years or so, that kind of fits Incarna's code, no?

(This isn't a judgement on the value of Incarna btw. WiS could be worth implementing, if there was fun content involved)

I don't think that they are spending anywhere near what they spent on WOD or Dust on Valk. Isn't it basically being made by a small team in Newcastle?

Just release Hilmars $1000 Japanese Pants. Charge $1000 worth of aurum and let the current monocle users decide if they want to be known as too poor to buy 'The Pants'. As their egos carry them towards their credit cards, Incarna suddenly makes a fortune :-p

Sounds reasonable, but man 21m dollars, did they really value it THAT high? I mean, they were right on top of it and KNEW it was utter crap. I mean, last time I entered the CQ (long time ago) I still couldn't believe the sorry state it was in.... Then again, it wouldn't be the first time ppl got so delusional about their product that they couldn't see it was just a pile of excrement...

Guys, the answer is OBVIOUS. There were clearly 21.4mil in Liquor expenses as evidenced by every single shot of the interior of CCP headquarters.
