+1, this should have people exploring all over EvE. It adds good content and works right into's Rubicon's theme of explorations

My only concerns are keeping the loot drops from these expeditions varied and not an instant isk farm. If not, you'll just keep seeing people farming these logs for faction loot. It needs to be chance based with a higher chance of low end loot or no loot at all.

Back in the days we had ship logs, but they did nothing ... just a collectors item.
Will be nice to "spice" up the exploration a little and make you actually look for multi part items to salvage data ... actually may be even introduce a new module "Midnight Data Salvager I" used specifically to recover computer data from the wrecks. Once the collected data pieces are recovered to 100% it grant you the coordinates of some exciting mission, escalation in deep space. Boom win!

I think this is the first thread I've seen on a forum that only has positive feedback.

This is my second bump I'll give you, as I'd be more than willing to leave high-sec on a T3 or T2 ship to explore more, or even more, use the new SOE ships that are hailed so much for their exploring capabilities.

This is one of the best ideas out there (totally subjective since I'm into exploration). CCP has destroyed exploration (IMHO) and ideas like this one are the right way to go. It's time that CCP seeds few Easter eggs. Exploration needs different/new content.

Analyze computer cores, logs, whatever ...

aweful idea. -1

basically, if these logs lead to expeditions in lowsec, a lot of highsec carebears would not want to do them, no matter what the reward is. they would sell them on the market. now you have lowsec entrepreneurs who buy them in bulk and run plex after plex. it would defeat the purpose of exploration, which is to have to travel around looking for stuff.

in essence, eploration would become too farmable.
i dont. like.

the only way this would in any way be a good idea, was if this content system was completly seperate from exploration, or if the logs were not tradable.

I havent' yet done DED complexes, but I definitevely like this idea! EVE has an enormous lore; logs are a great way to expand it and fit very well in this new exploration theme.

That's a distinct possibility - but that is a choice for the player to make. If you don't want to take the risk of delving into low or null, then you can sell the ship log to someone who isn't scared of working under such conditions.

No more than it is right now. Yes, it would be possible for one person to buy up all the ship logs, but then again you may not know what kind of expedition you will receive or what kind of drop you will get - if any. It's a gamble, like any expedition. If you've every received an expedition and bothered to run them, you would know that they are not guaranteed loot pinatas.

Loot drops are so unpredictable that it is entirely possible for the person selling the ship logs to make more money than running the sites themselves.

Eve is about making choices, particularly between risk and reward. Here, there really is some risk: Not only running the site itself, but also the risk of the expedition not escalating or not even dropping something valuable. It offers a new angle on an existing profession.

It sounds like you don't have a lot of experience with the current expedition system or realize the possibilities that this can open up for future content iterations.

On another note, wouldn't this be a more interesting way to provide access to the new Ghost exploration sites instead of just finding them on a scanner along with everything else?

For everyone else, thank you for the continued support.

If this is done, I would suggest it worked like this.

Ships drop 'Insert Faction' logs. For example 'Angels Cartel Log'
These then stack with other logs of the same faction. The log itself has nothing on it other than a basic description.
"This damaged ships log came from an Angels Cartel ship, Decryption of this log may provide further information"

This solves the issue of static descriptions & item bloat/tracking as it means there aren't a million variants out as physical items that all have to be updated when things change, but only a few, one for each faction. These could also exist for Empire factions possibly & even Sleepers.

To use these logs, they can then be decrypted via some sciencey based skill. This adds a value to the science skills for explorers, as well as a time based element, so you can't spam 100 of them at will and blitz, due to the decryption time.

When decrypted you get a mail notifying you (New notification category), with a short blurb. This is where you get the mentioned 'Funny' stuff. Since this occurs when decrypted though, these can be simple database entries that are much easier for CCP to change over whenever they want, rather than physical items needing updating, since a change won't impact anyone else who has already decrypted it, only people in the future. If it leads to an expedition, you then get the standard journal expedition entry also.

This could be further extended by having 'Damaged' logs 'Partial' logs & 'Complete' logs to give tiers of likely-hood to getting expeditions from them as well as quality of expeditions easily.

An excellent way to handle this, data bloat is a big problem that had not yet been addressed, you did it in great fashion.

+12 love it!

Fits perfectly to the 'exploration' theme and I always wanted to get the full story on those logs.

Yes, it drives me nuts when I get a part of a story but I only got some 'middle' part and have no clue what lead to xy events and why z has to be done - where??

You'll get my full support for all kinds of 'exploring a story all across the EVE map ideas'.

This needs to get a sticky as much as the Dinsdale's Cloud.

Eve Minions is recruiting.

This is the law of ship progression!
