It would be great if the NPCs were really hard to impress. Not only that but they criticize your fit. They also bring up past pilots who did the mission faster / better than you.

Surprisingly enough, this overt praise for trivial effort strategy works in real life too. Keep making people feel good about themselves, they'll spend piles of money at your shop instead of Comic Nerd Guy's shop because he's always telling them what losers they are.
