Whatever you think about him, it's difficult to deny that he was very good as his job - even if it meant pissing off commuters in London. The RMT was a strong union, with political clout. Tube drivers still have good pay, benefits, and pension whilst most other public sector employees have seen these slowly eroded over the last couple of decades.

I have mixed views about the strikes. On the one hand, some of them were (probably) genuinely motivated by a concern for safety. Safety on the underground in the 90s and 00s was truly shocking in some areas, after years of underfunding and the slow decay of the infrastructure. On the other hand, others were motivated by a desire to avoid changes to the working practices of his union members even when that might have resulted in a transport system that was better for Londoners.

as a person who has suffered under his governance of the RMT ...I don't miss his passing


actually I think that on the way home from work yesterday im pretty sure that I heard church bells ringing throughout London and the thames valley


but then ...it could have been my hearing aide playing up ? ... who knows Big smile
