What is an API Key, and why do so many corps want it?

The question really says it all. I'm new to the game and every time I go looking for a Corp that's always in the ad. What is it? Should I be giving it away to people i don't even know yet before I even get to meet them?

API lets them explore your characters history in depth.

Basically its just to see if you are a spy or not. They will see if you have emailed any reds to them or have set up any contracts to bad guys for isk, look at wallet transactions to see if you have acquired any large amounts of isk from people.Basically just look for any suspicious activities on your account.

Now they can not do anything with the key to harm your account, they cant change anything on your account or hack your account with the api key.

Also when you leave the corp you can always delete the key so they will not have any access to the info any longer. I wouldn't worry about handing over an api key.

As I recall, there is a 'limited' API key if I am not mistaken. (Been awhile.)
It gives your skills and time in game..

Would I give a 'full key'?
No...I'd go looking somewhere else.
But that's just me.

You can't loose anything by giving your full API. It allows recruiters to see if you being honest. It shows your wallet transactions, assets, emails etc. It can't be used to take anything.
If you were in a corp that didn't check.. you could be inviting thieves and awoxers.. do you really want to risk you fancy ships flying with someone who is out to steal it?
That said, its easy enough to be bad and pass an api check.

... What next ??
