Greetings, fellow capsuleers.

I was checking social skills today, in particular Connections, Criminal connections and Diplomacy and was wondering what's the point of leveling these skills, beyond artificially improving your standings once per level ?

It just struck me as odd the existence of skills that serve no purpose after one time use, given the fact you can still mess up your standings all the way to -10 regardless.

Thank you in advance for any and all clarifications.

They don't increase your standing one time. The bonus is persistent and permanent and adds a fixed percentage to your existing standing at all time.

As far as I can tell it would become impossible to get your standing to -10 because those skills would increase it to something higher. Not entirely sure how the math works with those skills though.

So, if math serves me right, I can never go below -6.0. Is that correct ?

If so, I stand corrected then.

Diplomacy only applies to base standings below 0. Connections only applies to base standing above 0.

Diplomacy 5 and -10.0 base = -10 + (10 - (-10)) * 4% * Diplomacy 5 = -6.0 effective standing

One thing worth noting is that with 0.0 corp standing, >-2.0 faction standing, and Connections 3 trained, you only ever have to do one level 1 mission to reach level 2 missions:

Connections 3 and +1.0E-100 (i.e. very low standing) = 1.0E-100 + (10 - 1.0E-100) * 4% * Connections 3 = 1.2 effective standing

Of course once your faction standing >= 1.0 you also never have to do level 1 missions for that faction ever again.

Thank you both for correcting my mistake based on faulty assumptions. Seems training these skills isn't as much of a waste of SP as I thought.

Should you decide to train leadership, you could always just do the social skills while you're in the Charisma remap. Doing that at the moment. :P

That's the plan thus far, though I'm leaving those skills for last. It's quite difficult to justify a charisma primary remap with so few useful charisma skills for the average capsuleer being worthwhile ;(

Yes, I have none. Er, wait - was this a question?

Charisma remap - getting a perfect command pilot from '0' was worth mapping charisma for me. I might pick up some social or just burn a bonus remap to get back to combat skills.

If you ever fly with more than 3-4 folk, a command ship is a pretty huge bonus.

My last set of skills are from leadership set except mining ones but it still leaves me a few months short on a charisma remap.

This topic actually helped me a bit, as I might just get some of the social skills to 5 and go for Fleet command V instead of just IV to fill the gap.

The social skills (Diplo, Connections, and friends) are very important for mission runners, HS POS owners, and people repairing their standings. Other wise they aren't useful.

Every pilot should consider training:
* Accounting
* Broker Relations

Because at some point, everybody buys or sells stuff, and these skills do save ISK.
