When you pick up a Drone/Probe signature with combat probes it will always be drones, other probes do not show up when probing.

No, but you can spot them with d-scan.

But not if the combat prober is smart and places them above/below more than 14AU of the plane of the system. It's a really useful defensive technique to catch new ship signatures in all but the very largest systems, and has saved my butt during PvE several times.

Quoted for emphasis on useful technique.

But if the enemy ship deployed combat probes, and then cloaked, you won't see the enemy ship (unless you happen to scan at exactly those few seconds, and you don't see his combat probes in your probe results...

So now i have a toss up: use combat probes (longer scan time) but risk missing enemy probes, or use dscan (almost instant scan time) but be oblivious to anything outside 14AU. I can't imagine clicking both continuously.

The combat probes method probably wins due to it catching new incoming wormholes

Which appear automatically(the sigs do at least), no matter where you are in system.

I get the feeling you haven't really thought this through?

There is a delay on signatures showing automatically, so having probes out will help you to catch new signatures faster as well as give you a chance at picking up new ships.

What kind of delay is there? I know from rage-rolling statics that as soon as you can scan it, it shows up in the list. There is no delay whatsoever beyond the normal respawn mechanics for statics that have always existed, so I was inclined to believe there is no delay at all. Unfortunately.

I havent noticed an actual time on the delay, but before i do a probe scan i tick and untick the show anomolies box. If theres a new sig, it will show.

Signatures wer cooler when we couldn't remove them completely.

I was reading about a guy doing some rolling work. If you are the one doing the rolling/ finishing a site, you will see it update in your scanner immediately, but for anyone else in the system (your alt, corpmates), it will be slightly delayed (to the point where the author was claiming the site did not despawn on the alt's scanner until he refreshed the scanner)

Anecdotal, but on a recent rage-roll (two-three days ago), corpmates were calling out the appearance of the new sig just as quickly as I was watching it appear (guy calling it was multiboxing the closing, and I was scanning, on-grid with the hole being rolled). There could be client-server cache update latency involved, as a few times I saw it before it was called and a few times he called it before I saw it, but so far it doesn't seem like CCP is specifically delaying the appearance of new sigs in the carebear warning window.

Rolling holes in your own system is not the way you're going to notice, you would need to be in the system you're rolling into, without scanning or refreshing your show anomalies. Signatures tend to auto update about once a minute.
