Dev blog: Worlds With A World - A Message Through Time

The reception of the Monument within the community has been overwhelming. Due to the fact that there are still tickets streaming in with questions and names, we have decided to do another snap shot of the player base on March 31st to add to the one we have already made. This means there is now an extra month of time to get your name added to list of players that is to be memorialized.

In addition to that, CCP Falcon also details how to get a message through time - a text message or a video that will be added to a time capsule that is to be sealed inside the structure itself on a solid state drive.

Eve is not a free to play, so stop charging players for everything cool you make What?

By making it a PLEX thing you're taking PLEXes off the market, thus increasing their price and the isk cost for those who pay their subscription using PLEXes.

True but how else would you narrow down the submission pool, someone is going to have to review all the submissions and or do the work to make sure all submissions get placed in the time capsule.

I can't support this new "thing" CCP has in mind. You, icelander have really something with sculpture for sure (Reykjavík is already full of sculprture on every streets ^^) but wasting money and efforts in a so futile project when these efforts and money could be focuse on more serious things like internet spaceship ... i cant understand.

The guy has a point. 25 years ago it was 1989, think what the computers were like at the time.

Do you have any idea what the data retention life on the flash memory inside an SSD is? My job is the reliability of such memory devices, and the best silicon chip manufacturers in the world only rate their memory to hold the data (unrefreshed) for five years maximum. After that, the data degrades and becomes unreadable. In 25 years, you will have a useless lump of metal, silicon, plastic, and fiberglass. That's going to make for some spectacle at the ceremony when the capsule is opened - all the anticipation to see the messages left a quarter of a century before culminating in one big "unable to read device" message!

So in 25 years, will the players who bought PLEX to pay to have a message preserved in this "time capsule" be able to get a refund when their messages are lost?

I suppose this is just another example of the shortsightedness CCP has been demonstrating of late.
