Arch Linux Black Screen

This morning I logged on, after the server restart and when I log in and select my char all I get is a black screen and a pop up saying I have an eve mail.

Not done any upgrades that would've broke it.

Nuked all my settings, didn't do anything.
Nuked my wine env and reinstalled and still had it.

Anyone got any suggestions, was there a patch this morning?

I was experiencing the same issue this morning under Ubuntu 13.10 and Wine 1.7.13. I didn't make any changes to anything, just restarted my game client a few times and the issue finally resolved itself, although it took a minute for the black screen to resolve itself into the station environment.

Edit: The issue has returned...

Ok, so I am noticing I also can not get to any eve-related website or even ping, mtr or traceroute to places such as eveonline.com forums.eveonline.com either.

I AM able to finally load station environment if I wait 10+ minutes at the black screen after the character selection screen...

Honestly wondering whats changed (especially as there was no client update)

If you're unable to reach forums.eveonline.com then how are you posting here? Perhaps this is an issue with internet provider? I'm located in CA and have comcast.

The problem is not limited to Linux users:

https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=326127&find=unread

I was able to get around it by using a VPN to somewhere far from my ISP (Comcast Northern CA). So it is likely ISP specific routing issues.

Well I decided to test the DNS theroy and changed over to OpenDNS, worked right away after doing this. All I did was edit /etc/resolv.conf and added...

# OpenDNS nameservers
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220

Also commented out my current comcast servers, but yea that did the trick. Thanks to Xolotl for giving me the idea.

Checking in, having same issue on 2 machines.
First machine, desktop running Debian Sid with wine 1.7.11, black screen on login. When I left it for an hour, I came back to see that at some point the ui had loaded but the socket had closed
Second machine, Thinkpad X61 running Debian Sid, same issues. When I booted this machine into windows, it logged in fine.

Its also interesting that I can't post on the forums (clicking 'Reply' causes it to hang and eventually give "The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.") with my normal internet connection, but using Tor I can post just fine.

Try changing your DNS, I think it's comcast.

EDIT:

Oh yea, I can also post fine now, where I could not before.

I forgot to mention, my ISP isn't Comcast, it's a local ISP (Southern US). It also seems that I can post on Windows, but not on Debian or a Windows virtual machine with a Debian host

Well I just tried switching toons again and I'm back to a black screen. I think whatever they did during DT is messing with DNS somehow, I'll try to switch to google DNS and report back.

Waited long enough that I received this message during the black screen:

Your client has waited 5 minutes for a remote call to complete.
This could mean that the server is very loaded.

Please be patient, chances are that the call will complete eventually but depending on the load it might be considerable time.

After getting the message I switched to the OpenDNS servers and continued to get the black screen.

changing DNS did the trick - SF Bay area here but not on Comcast - switched to non ISP DNS servers and all was well.

Closing firefox and trying to reload eve has helped me twice so far. I was also unable to post while I was in game.

EDIT:

I'm still using opendns servers.

How did you do this? I can successfully navigate to the aformentioned file (/$/etc/resolv.conf) and open it in gedit, but I can't save the file.

Trying

sudo chmod 644 resolv.conf

doesn't work either.

Sorry, I'm a bit novice =D

SYSTEM:
Ubuntu 13.10, Wine 1.7.13
ISP:
Comcast,
SF Bay Area, California

EDIT(9:30pm PST):
Looks like the black screen issue is gone for me, haven't modified the file yet. Wouldn't mind learning how to do it, if only for education purposes.

Im having these issues aswell.

Cleared cache, switched too a backup of Eve client. Tried different Wine versions. Changed my DNS (OpenDNS and Google)
Tried 3 different accounts. Also tried using a different internet connection using my phones mobile Broadband. Same issues.

The Eve forums does Not work in Chrome, But works sometimes in FireFox (Dafuq?).

A humble guess is that this is caused by some DDOS mitigation measures.
And judging by a previous guy that got blackscreen in Linux but connected fine in Windows, Might there be something wrong with my identity that makes the servers actively prevent me from playing?

Please advice me on how to proceed. as my training que runs out in a few hours.

As a previous poster so eloquently put it. FML..

Best regards
//Hianhif

PS - I live in Sweden and use the Swedish ISP ComHem which is a major ISP (Atleast for my small country).

Here is the process I have been using to best success.

Start the eve launcher.

Click play.

Choose my toon.

Get black screen.

Open up terminal and type

killall ExeFile.exe

Which should leave the launcher running, yet close the client.

I keep doing this process until it works, usually works on second launch.

Also, I am still useing OpenDNS and Arch Linux.

Confirming that this issue was fixed for me by changing DNS servers.
