what exactly is the benefit of a exhumer vs a mining barge?

most tier 2 ships i see have some pretty notable bonuses, but when it comes to the difference between tier 1 and tier 2 mining barges, the different seems mostly nill. am i reading it right that a mack only has a 3-5% bonus in mining over the retreiver? the covetor seems to even have a higher bonus to mining than the hulk does, what am i missing?

The mack mines faster, holds more ore, can have a better tank, warps faster and has double the drone bandwidth.

Exhumers give miners something to train for if they can't think of anything else they'd rather do in the game.

you're correct mostly. Before the barge rebalance all the t1 barges were sort of crap and did the same thing, while the t2 barges had specialized roles (ice, mercoxit, ore). After the rebalance, they gave each t1 barge a particular strength, made the t2 versions just bigger and better (with better yield) and allowed all 3 barges to do all 3 kinds of mining.
