It used to be just like any other system with agents and asteroids.

People started buying and selling. A high sec marketplace in one of the most popular regions was born.

It became so popular that CCP pulled all the agents out of there and all the asteroid bets so that all that was left was buying and selling.

Also if you look at a map of any market hub you will see a commonality - they all border another region.

Jita (The Forge) borders Sobaseki (Lonetrek) and Muvolailen (The Citadel).
Dodixie (Sinq Laison) borders Meves and Athinard (Everyshore).
Amarr (Domain) borders Kor-Azor Prime (Kor-Azor)
Rens (Heimatar) does not border another region. While Hek (Metropolis) does border Eystur (Heimatar)

This makes them convenient for people in multiple regions. You'll also observe a real deficiency in the markets in those border regions - in many there is no real market because of the overreaching arms of the larger market hubs.

IIRC it also had to do with a reworking of the gates after relese to Castor. Another system was starting to become the hub, but they removed a gate I think and rerouted another (note, I joined eve after Castor, so I could be wrong but that's what I remember hearing from beta players at the time)

OMG Comet Mining idea!!! Comet Mining!

Jita is the geographical "center" of new eden.

This one time, a hive of scum crashed into a hive of villainy, and Jita was born.

Although I hear that there is one smaller hub that is more wretched, but its in a galaxy far far away, and that was a long time ago.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

2 years ago when I had this very same question, I consulted Google. It worked.

I should add that the main trade hub may change at anytime. You will know if this happens when James 315 issues the decree making it so.

not that i dont find making poor highsec miner's lives hell, but even the goons could only keep up the ice blockade a couple months.

also, shouldnt you be busy traolling the SC forums about their impending doom? best of luck btw, anyone so delusional as to invest 100 bucks in delayed vaporware deserves a horrible experience. (but who knows, maybe the devs will troll them all for you, we shall see)

Yulai used to be the centre of EvE. Then CCP changed the gate network significantly to take out the superhighways that had formed and at the time a lot of people were rolling Caldari as missiles didn't suffer size penalties to smaller targets the way turrets did at the time. Torp ravens were not something you wanted to see on the field as a frig pilot.

Well in the beginning, there was darkness.

CONCORD said "Let there be light!!!" and there was.

That light culminated in the explosion of a star, which collided with a POCO and a Fedo.

It was in that moment that 4-4 was born.

Originally, capsuleers were attracted to the site to watch a Fedo hump a POCO, and a tent city was developed to trade amongst one another.

But on one fateful night, a gas storm from the Ajhnrjahahfakjf nebula killed the Fedo, morphing it's lifeless body into a hard shell, melded with the POCO.

The tent city moved inside...

And the rest is history.

Once you realize what a joke everything is, being the comedian is the only thing that makes sense.

I'm going to research it now, because that's actually an interesting question. It's going to be interesting seeing how soon it changes again though, given the problems some players experience over the weekend. It would be great to see stronger, more regional markets growing.

Quote:
The trading centre of the solar system is located at the Caldari Navy Assembly Plant orbiting Planet 4, Moon 4.

Jita became a major trading hub when several high level agents conducted their business from the system's stations. Pod pilots running missions for these agents traded their loot from Jita's stations. Jita's location at the axis of several major trade routes through New Eden increased the volume of trade taking place in system. Soon the volume of trade in Jita was greater than any other system in the eve universe.

The agents have since left Jita as the traffic generated by trade activities within the system have made their business impractical, and the asteroid belts there have become permanently depleted.

The system provides an ideal location for traders as large numbers of buyers frequent the systems. This improves the turnover rate of their goods. Likewise, buyers are treated to large numbers of sellers competing for their custom.

A further advantage of Jita is that it is located at a junction of 3 regions, and lies only 2 jumps away from a 4th, Sinq Laison, allowing residents to compare prices over a wide area with minimal effort. A further 6 jumps allows a pilot to also check the markets in Domain.

In addition to what is mentioned in the article then: Not only are there no agents in Jita but agents outside Jita don't send pilots on missions into Jita, wormholes don't open in Jita, and (along with a few other systems) then all Planetary Interaction is prohibited in Jita.

The article also says something about 1,000 people...

I thought this happened when CCP changed space lane routes - the hub used to be Yulai (oh how I miss thee....) and then CCP changed how high sec systems were connected, changing shipping lanes, and removing Yulai to a low sec island.

The new shipping lanes put Jita more or less centered and at the crossroads of a lot of auto-pilot trips; thus it developed as a major trade hub. Why Jita 4-4, not totally sure but I believe it had the best agents and the most manufacturing slots at the time of this change.
