Scams: Where do you stand?

Piracy and "blue collar" crimes, in general, are viewed as fair game in the EVE community.

Scamming, scheming, and white collar crimes, on the other hand, seem a lot more controversial. I hear a lot of people say that they think of it as something outside of normal moral EVE boundaries, and others who say it's just another way to make some ISK.

So I ask you: where do you stand on scamming in EVE? Fair game, or exceptionally awful?

Personally, I think that all is fair in love and EVE. My opinion may be a little biased, since I've never been a victim of a scam (nor scammed anyone else), but I generally harbor the philosophy that anything in EVE that doesn't involve a) hacking, b) messing with someone's account or c) the real world is within the realm of fair game.

I typically don't stand when I play.

When I do stand, it's over there.

Working as intended. The only ones complaining about scams are the greedy victims of the scams. Leave it as is. Scams generate both content and good tearsTwisted

I agree with you, if the game allows it, it's fair game. The problem that people have with scams is not that they were scammed, but that they don't like admitting that they were dumb and or greedy enough to fall for them.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

If the rules permit it, it is fair game.

The rules do, therefore it is.

First page life lesson (RL and in-game) kiddies, so gather round:

If you're ever talking to someone, anyone, and they utter the words "trust me" you are about to get scammed, cheated and left without.

You can trust me on thatPirate

Is there a line where you call it profit from lazy/greedy players and beyond that a scam?

My little trading alt (side project for fun) is about to hit the 100mil mark from trading only (never fired a shot) from his 5000 starter ISKies. Did I scam people? I wouldn't say so. I charged them for their lazyness.

The thing with margin trading is somewaht debatable in my view but the basic rule "if it looks to good to be true then it is too good to be true" (ergo a scam) applies in de facto all cases.

I fell to a pretty obvious scam and learned from it. So I basically paid pixel monies to learn something I can also apply in real life. It's somewhat of a win-win.

Whilst legit play they are annoying.

Especially since most of the spam in Jita, Dodi etc is only really going to fool new players. There is always the block option of course.

I prefer Hek, most of the local conversation is posting killmails with comments like "look at the officer crap this idiot fitted" or asking stuff like "does anyone want to duel my Abbadon" .

Scams are good. Unless theyre bad, in which case theyre still kinda good. Kinda like Sex or Pizza.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

I'd have thought that pizza burns would prevent the latter for most non sado masochists.

I'm totally fine with scamming.
In fact, I encourage clever scamming. Put some thought into it, make it elaborate. Make the tears run thick.

I've been scammed. Once. Lost a billion ISK. Up front, looked like a good deal. All seemed reasonable.
Looking back on it, it was pretty obvious.
I accept it, that's life. I can make it back in no time.

What I don't like are the 'scams' that are spammed 23.5/7 in busy systems.
The people who fall for those are the uninformed.
AKA. Rookies/Newbies. People who are likely to quit after losing any real amount of ISK.

It hinders the growth of the game and crushes any real live trade in the hub systems.

Props to CCP for going in and cleaning out on occasion, but something more permanent needs to be done there.

Pizza burns? But in the latest Top Gear, they demonstrated that pizza was an excellent heat shield. I'm so confused now. Cry

I tossed 2 mill at an isk doubler for entertainment, and a creative explanation on how I broke the rules.

Oh, I perfectly understand, Hal Morsh — a mission like this requires courage, skill, and heroism… qualities you are clearly lacking. Have you forgotten you're one of the bloody immortals!?

My first thought was that this can't be good for the game, driving away customers that would pay money, etc.

But EVE has been going strong for 11 years now so I guess they're doing something right?

I've never been scammed so I guess I can say that without really relating to scam victims...
