Hi all ,
I am in an art course right now and I need models and or shots showing the difference and effects of model detail and texture detail , ideally models i can look at in detail using 3dsmax . The assignment requires i can show and demonstrate that texture maps do a lot more of the work than polygons. I was wondering if there is any eve resources available that i could use for this ?

any help is appreciated ,

First of all this is the wrong forum for this.

But this is what your looking for http://triexporter.codeplex.com/

And you have to find granny2.dll yourself and put it in the same folder as the TriExporter.exe

ok cheers , have downloaded tri , but having issues , when double clicking on the file saying model not loaded , why are these things so hard to get going ! lol

as bagrat pointed out there is a huge triexporter section in the tech lab. There are people helping eachother out and getting things fixed and up 2 date.

so you can eventually end up with shots like this:

OP, you may either want to make the models or buy them. Exporters like this are iffy, and anything other than that such as "free" are usually trash.

However... I'd point you to http://www.scifi3d.com/
Some of those models are actually properly modeled and textured, and free.

No... not really. Shaders are (e.g. tessellation shaders etc), but texture maps can be useful for shader usage.

the only real thing textures do for your mesh is to make it look alot better. Normal maps are the only real change maker in the textures. other then that as webvan pointed out you rely on shaders and combine that with textures, floating points and other shader vectors to make it look shiny.

Competent texture well help getting from merit ti distinction BUT you need to be near a distinction without them anyway.

Odd that you are using 3ds instead of Maya, but whatever.
I feel sorry for you because last I checked getting models and textures to play right with each other was very difficult. You HAD to use gimp and HAD to use 3ds. I don't know if they fixed that yet but I wish you the best of luck.

Might be the stockholm syndrome talking but max can be good for that kind of thing, i don't remember gimp being a necessary though.

GIMP? Yeah, it's not an industry standard by any means. The typical standard is either Photoshop and/or Zbrush. The standard being what companies use, what colleges teach, what certs and degrees that exist around them or included within. GIMP is no where in there...

Even in indie development or freelancing, GIMP is used, but far from any standard. Even Paintshop Pro may be more widely used in actual projects compared to GIMP. For just general personal work, a free program to edit a few things with, GIMP would certainly have the edge there. But then you have things like project dogwaffle taking away GIMP's general user base, or autodesk putting out nice drawing/editing apps for cheap, GIMP gets even further marginalized. If it weren't for the large Blender 3D community promoting GIMP with newbie friendly how-to tutorials and videos, GIMP would probably see hardly any activity in texturing for modeling projects.

And for 3ds max, no one ever "HAD" to use it to make textured play nice with models. There have always been good alternatives, and even some of those have fallen into the standard depending on the disciplines and applications.
