Hey guys,

I'm still trying to find my way around the market and I'd like to read your thoughts about this. Today, core scanner probes in Jita are available for 16 000 isk / each. Last time I checked, I could buy them for 8 000 isk in this very hub. According to the item history in Jita, there was a HUGE spike in demand yesterday (more than 20 000 units exchanged, usually it never reaches the 10k). I already saw this for some items, and it seemed to happened during week-ends mainly.

Do you have an explaination for this phenomenon ? Is this what they call "market manipulation" ? What does this word mean ? Some guys are putting crazy sell orders to make the prices spike and get more money from their stock ?

How do you cope with it when you need to restock ? Is there a way to make some profits from it, knowing that I wasn't aware it would happen ?

Thanks in advance !

Or moving them to a SoE mission hub.

It's always been possible to profit from an intentionally created short term price spike like that, as long as it is a product that has legitimate demand, that no one bothers to stockpile, and that takes some time to restock after a buy up.

Before dual character training led to more people making t2 ammo on on-account alts, I used to do this occasionally with tech 2 ammo. It was overall profitable, but I did get burned once. Still sitting on three million units of Null S from that debacle, ah well, the price of a lesson.

Looks like it was pretty short lived. Market is flooded again with normal buy and sell orders.

The other thing this can be is just a 'for the lulz' exercise.

I occasionally see people buy up every one of a particular script in a mission hub.

Thanks for all your replies. I realize my questions are somewhat naive but really, the market is (by far) the most intriguing aspect of EvE to me. I hope I'll get better over time though. For now, I'll keep looking at those spikes and bumps, trying to understand what's behind them Big smile

I recommend trying to cause one of these chaotic spikes on a low value, medium demand item like these probes when you want to waste 50 million ISK for a few laughs.
