Curse you wormholes! (scanning for combat sites)

Is there any way to ignore wormhole signatures before you even scan? My friend and I love to do 3/10 sites in our frigates (we are brand new), but after hours of searching all we find are systems full of unstable wormholes. Since it takes a while to get to 75% strength to differentiate wormholes and combat sites, we spend more time scanning than we do shooting things. Any ideas?

Deep space probes can help filter out K162 wormholes (the most common type in known space). However, this will also filter out 3/10s and Lookouts.

Check out St. Mio's guide for more info.

short answer - no
Long answer - no, their signal strength overlap. Separate group for WH sigs have been requested right after they have been introduced. See any effect? me neither UghOops

If you're serious about scanning it shouldn't take you long to scan down a signature enough to know it's a wormhole. It's all a matter of your skills and implants. When I'm not looking for wormholes, it takes me maybe two scans to rule them out.

Yes, one solid idea:

Check this thread my St Mio: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=6457

Use the file, and discard sites from the first scan using deep probes - there is a little risk involved too Roll

See let us take this as an example of how,"I know what I know and I am so epeen for it I will tell you I know and how stupid you are for not knowing"..........let us have a new attitude here in these forums. If you have a methodology or triger that tells you it is wormhole sigs pray tell but please don't post about being a know it all.

That being said the answer to the OP is no there is not a way to rule them out or omit them from the search you must rely on your knowledge and experience to know what is starting to show and make sure you are cloaked at a planet somewhere while probing..however short you think it may be. FLY SAFE!

So much bad advice in a single post.

1. Lets not have a new attitude.
2. He's right, it is about skills and implants. Its also about experience. Is that really a shocker?
3. There is a way to filter whs out (to some degree) as has been mentioned in this thread.
4. Warping to a planet to drop your probes takes time. Time is everything in exploration. Align to your outbound gate, drop probes, start scanning. Warp if you get targeted by possible gankers. You can even do this in low sec if the gate is clear.

One other thing which has not been mentioned yet.

Pick your area of operations carefully. There are places which are completely overrun by explorers and a 3/10 plex will not last longer than 10 minutes from the time it spawns - it is usually in these areas where you only find wormholes.

Find a quiet area and have fun, you'll increase your chances of finding the plexes you seek significantly.

(I know this does not per se discount the WH sigs, but by increasing the signal to noise ratio it will have a net positive effect)

This is what exploration is all about. You have no idea what you will find where. My personal advice is to try to make yourself as versatile as possible to make the most out of what you do find. Don't limit yourself to just 3/10s. Yeah, the ded sites are where the good isk is at (when a good mod drops Blink) but you're missing out on some good radar/mag sites also.

Also, WHs are quite profitable themselves once you get accustomed to them. Although as a new player, I would not recommend them.

I think you misunderstand.

I scan at 32 AU. I get approximate locations for most of the sigs. I scan again at 8 AU, and then at 2 AU. At 2 AU I have a type for almost every kind of signature there is. It's the typical "scan, resize, scan, resize" approach that is the staple of scanning, it's just made easier with skills and implants.

Yeah I should have specified that the 3/10 thing was just when my friend and I played together. Solo I do mag/radar sites, as radar sites especially are worth decent isk. Thanks everyone for the tips

So, as i didn't see this posted around and as I live in WH and scanning is what we do, I'd like to point out that besides skills you can also reduce your scanning time by using the right ship / fit. First of all try to use Sister's Probes and probe launcher and use a Cov Ops frigate with scanning rigs to help you reduce your scanning time significantly. I know those modules might cost a lot and can only be found on contracts, but it's worth it.

Would be way too easy to be able to detect which signature is a wormhole, and which one is a PLEX "before" even scanning!

That kills the whole interest of scanning in my opinion.
It's random, it's how it works, deal with it. Or don't do it.

Wouldn't kill it in my opinion, so I guess we're even :P

Besides, I wouldn't know which ones are plexes until I get to 25%, as grav/ladar/mag/radar would still show up. Do you find separating cosmic anomalies from signatures also kills your interest in scanning?

Right now I'm working on Electronic Upgrades 5 for my Anathema. In my current magnate (with Frigate 5), I use 5 Sisters probes and 2 scanning rigs, but not a Sisters probe launcher (too pricey for now). I imagine switching to a rigged Anathema with covops 4 will be a huge boost and reduce this headache. I was just curious if there was a way to reduce frustration for lower SP players. Unfortunately Astrometrics 5 for the deep space probe trick is a luxury on the horizon at this point, with its 16 day-ish training time.

However, a great idea so far is to go to areas with lower population. So simple I did a /facepalm at my stupidity. Obviously searching for sites in areas with 100+ in local is not a way to find things. I went to a dead end area (all high sec with 0 in local) and found a combat site in the second system. /shame

Actually I have found a lot of combat sites in extremely populated areas, like next market/mission hubs, since the common thought is "Oh, this spot is populated, I better go someplace quiet" and you don't bother scanning.

If I stare at the door long enough, maybe, just maybe, it'll open

When I first started scanning and running radar/mag/combat sites I just went to a trade hub, set destination to another hub and started scanning the route. Not as bad as one might think.

You could go to the scan filter settings and filter out cosmic sigs.

That filters out the combat sites he's looking for, too.
