Hey, another day another noob question

What are your favourite shortcuts to save your life or save you time

I do love that eve can be played with just the mouse but I know shortcut keys make things so much easier

Id really like a shortcut for loot all and auto close the window, as that's fiddly as all hell

please don't link me to a web page showing every shortcut, 4 or 5 most useful ones will do for now

CTL+click to target, Q to approach, W to oribt, E to keep at range, A to align to, F to assign the drones, alt+shift+R to reorbit the drones around you, CTL+space = full stop

CTL+W to close a window, ctrl+alt+w close all windows.

The life saver is to never use the mouse to lock.

There is no shortcut key for looting.

I defined a shortcut for undocking when the button moved up and right.

To minimize confusion and keep as few shortcuts as possible, I delete every shortcut listed in the esc menu except for the ones listed here, which i've reassigned from their default settings. I'll explain what I use and where on the keyboard they are. This system is actually quite comfortable and i've yet to find or see a better method from anyone else. Granted, everybody's keyboard is different so this may feel great on my hands while it feels like torture on yours.

Top rack of modules:

F1, F2, F3 and F4 are for the pinky to index finger respectively. They are the activation buttons for the top rack of modules. I never have more than 4 modules in the top rack except when I have a cloak, which I keep at F5 so that my index finger has to stretch a little to reach it (And therefore won't touch the deactivation button accidentally in the wrong circumstances.) I do a lot of WH camping and therefore spend a lot of time looking at and being on grid with enemy POS's. I'm always paranoid that I'll press the wrong button, decloak myself and get raped by POS guns. This layout has never given me any problems or confusion. I always position the mods in order from futhest optimal to closest, so that I press them in succession as I approach the enemy ship.

Middle rack:

I have no shortcuts for these, I use the mouse. I throw the alternate weapons and other crap that I may need to pulse on this rack: Neuts, Cap booster, etc.

Low rack:

This rack also has no shortcuts. I use the mouse for these as well, and usually defensive modules go here. Reppers, Resists, Sebo's, etc.

Whatever I end up doing with the Middle and Low racks, the main idea is that I have all my primary tackle/anything that I immediately need to activate at the start of a fight and keep running for the duration of it at my fingertips on the F1-F4 keys.

Directly below the F1 - F4 weapons shortcuts, I have the navigation shortcuts:

1, 2, 3 and 4 are also for the pinky to index finger. 1 = Approach, 2 = align, 3 = Keep at range and 4 = Orbit.

The ship speed is controlled by the directional arrows on the right side of the keyboard (Closest to the enter key.)

Up = Increase speed
Down = Decrease speed
Right = Full Speed
Left = Stop ship.

Drones:

You always have to unload the drones from your drone bay manually, there is no shortcut ability for it. (At least I haven't found one.) Once drones are in orbit around the ship:

E = Engage
R = Return and orbit
B = Return to bay
C = Reconnect to lost drones
T = Toggle aggressive/passive

Other stuff:

Spacebar = Lock. (Hold spacebar and left click to lock ships.)
Alt = show the little box over your ship when zoomed out
W = Warp to
D = Dock
Next target, Last target and PTT for TS are all done with buttons on the mouse.

I may be missing one or two minor shortcuts that don't come to mind, but aside from these regularly used ones, everything else is done with the mouse using the in-game interfaces.

Just to fix 2 errors:

Both mid slots as well as low slots DO have shortcuts by default already

Shift + F1 - 8
Alt + F1 - 8

Not most people use those shortcuts though as clicking those modules with a mouse is generally easier

Same as quoted, I prefer keep actual key modules on F1 - 8 and then stack the non major modules on midslot/lowslots.

My most used shortcut has to be "d" when highliting a gate or station on the overview to either warp-dock or warp-jump. Then the drone commands.

Just a note on remapping shortcuts: most people don't.

If you ask people "how do you quickly lock a target", people will reply "CTRL+Click". This won't work when you remapped your default shortcuts. Furthermore, it can have undesired consequences. I would advise any new player against remapping shortcuts until they know enough.

Just adding one I use a lot, CTRL+SHIFT+click on targeted object will unlock the target.

Well, I deleted nearly all of the default shortcuts, because I just find them annoying.

Ones I use:
* ALT R = recall drones to orbit
* ALT B = recall drones to bay
* ALT E = engage drones
* ALT J = open capital navigation window

All these things that there aren't shortcuts for, like salvaging, is there a good reason they don't let us set up shortcuts for them?

Because people would automate it too easily seems to be the only answer that makes sense.
