Do you edit to the music?

Hi,

Thought I'd throw out some musings on the usage of music in EVE Videos and wished to understand how the community edit their videos aurally.

I find when listening to music, I get a picture in my mind of a battle; or series of battles, taking place in New Eden. The way I've found these pictures to present themselves is inline with the type of music I'm listening to.

For example, when listening to Drum 'n' bass/dubstep, I find the following:

  • Silence = black screen/break in editing.

  • Music but no beat/rhythm = depending on musical style, this is normally epic shots, wide angle shots, uplifting shots, intro/outro shots, titles.

  • Bass = speed. An increase or decrease of the frequency determines the speed of the footage. The normalized bass line means no increase or decrease in the footage.

  • Synth/melody = the movement and speed of ships attacking and/or the firing of weapons. Again, variations in the frequency can alter the speed of the footage.

  • Snare = hits and strikes on the hull/armour/shield of opposing ships.

  • Kick = editing cuts and transitions. shot changes.

  • Cymbals = explosions.

  • Interested in knowing what music you listen to and what imagery appears in your mind when you listen to it.

    Personally I don't "edit to the music" so much, but I do get inspiration from the music I plan to use in a video for editing ideas.

    A good example is the first minute or so to my latest vid, laktos intolerance 2:

    I knew I wanted to use the Metallica song Some Kind of Monster as the aural center piece for my video. The song starts off with a quiet guitar riff playing and about 20 seconds in makes a harsh transition into a heavier and louder version of the same riff at the same time the other instruments start playing. To segue from the intro soft riff to the main loud riff the song overlays a high pitched whining sound kind of like the sound you get when you put a microphone too close to an amplifier. Despite that (or perhaps because of it), the transition is a harsh, sudden and heavy switch from quiet riff to loud riff and this made me want to use the song as the opening piece.

    So I made the opening title on a black screen play during the soft riff and then cut to pvp footage as the song transitions to the loud riff. Because of the aural harshness of the high pitched sound and sudden increase in volume I did away with any smooth transition effect from black screen to footage and just did a sudden cut to match the visual effect with the aural effect.

    In this way listening to the music a lot while thinking about making my video built up a rough image in my head of how I wanted to use the song in the video and then the details were formed during the creative process itself.

    There are a couple Eve vids that seem to be edited in this way, but not many.

    As an example, "Infectious" by Rawr Cristina is pretty much a music video.

    The reason is that most people focus on featuring the fights. Editing down fights just to match the music would usually be annoying for people trying to get an accurate sense of the engagement. It makes more sense to cut down a song rather than cut down a scene.

    I always edit to the music, i am of the school of thought that believes audio and visual should always be in sync as is makes for a more engaging entertainment experience since what you can see and hear fits together more easily in your brain box.

    I Edit to the music alot. Actually the music will often dictate the order of the fights since I want the fights to fit the to the music as much as possible. I've even sometimes ditched certain footage because I was unable to find fitting music, no ****.

    When I hear a piece of music that I think will work for an EVE video, I often picture a hypothetical situation in the game that would fit the music perfectly. It's rare that I actually manage to get footage that fits as well as I'd like, but it happens.

    The most important thing imo is that the music has to fit the lenght of a fight, or at least there needs to be a kind of break in the music if there's a transition in the footage. Another thing I think alot about is making the endings 'fit', fx if a piece of music is ending with a violent climax and then a big 'boom' on the final beat, that'll work pretty well for a fight where I end up blowing up. Or if the music is losing intensity near the end and mby fading entirely out, it'll be pretty good for a scene where I deaggro and jump out.

    I've even went as far as to sometime Edit the music to fit the video, rather than the other way around. Some pieces of music also just has parts in them that I don't really find fitting, and then I edit them out. In fact, I was in the process of editing (mixing actually) a piece of music for my next video just as I saw this thread :P

    Yeah. I've got a pretty awesome song I'd like to use for my next movie and cause it's a bit specific (there's a massive change of rhythm in the middle) I'm kind of stuck. It's pefromed in a fighting mood overall, thus the fight I long for has to depict me doing quite a lot of kills - and that's something rare in modern EVE where people tend to leave 1 vs blob fights if the blob fails to kill that 1 ship straight ahead in, say, 1 minute. Damn suckers!

    As for the music overall, I'd say that my music choices mostly come by intuition. But being very distinct, these visions of how things should match each other leave me pretty confident that I even couldn't have picked any other music track for some particular scene.

    And the same goes for me seeing movies made by the others. Say, Panzer by FraXy:

    The structure is burning and the music matches the clip perfectly. I simply can not imagine listening to another song during that fight. That's an awesome achievement and is exactly how one is to pick tracks.

    It's surely cool to make some stresses to match the music in certain places, but I think that's not really required. It's more important to match the fighting pace overall. Or, you know, your own mood and perception of that particular scene.

    Ah the days of ignorance and tracking disrupting a Drake. Oops
    In my defense i had a heart rate of 150+ through most of that.

    Appreciate the comment and it made me feel a bit fuzzy on the inside, and a reminder on why i used to make vids at all.


    Back when i made Eve vids actively i tried to the best of my limited and often poor music taste to accomodate the Fraps footage at hand.

    Syncing the footage with music makes for a more pleasant and engaging view just like a proper movie soundtrack.

    Although like you, Willl and others have said.

    It is not always easy to match a footage with the music you want, or vica versa.

    I think it's a better example of framing a shot than editing to the music - I swear you could put a 3 x 3 grid on the screen and it would be pixel perfect.

    The Exiled would have been a better example of editing to the music.
